Links from sites with a lower ranking is not necessarily a bad thing. You will get a higher ranking with Google if sites with a good reputation start linking to your site. What Google is currently doing is penalizing sites for having webspam links in their content.

There's lot's of info out there in SEO blogland. I'd recommend a few hours research before your consultant comes over next week so you can tell if he's keeping his practices up to date with the latest Google changes.

ta, thought that was the case. we don't bother with link farms and the like, and are getting links from higher PR pages (7, 8, 9) - just got a lot of content sat on my computer and want to get it used quickly (pre-launch of a new version of the site).

I think SEO is becoming more and more like snake oil. a) Google are wise to most of the tricks and b) if everyone applies SEO techniques, then what? They can't all be #1.

Google constantly refine their algorithms to find the best sites for a particular search. So, make sure your site is the best and Google will send people your way. If you just game Google's algorithm, the algorithm will change.

There are some basics to get right though, like good blog post title choice and correct use of heading tags and so on, but that's just good web design.

We have sometimes likened Google and the SEO people to being like the Jedi and the Dark Side - both equally strong, both continually trying to beat the other.

Regular content updates are important - this can be from a variety of sources pointing to your website - Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, blog @ blogspot, your own website update etc.

I don't know why, it looks like crap. He might know his stuff about SEO but he doesn't know squat about making a clear, readable page.

This reliance and focus on visits/visitors/page views is just vanity. It means nothing unless your selling ad space on per view basis. And even then your advertisers won't hang around long if the traffic is poor/irrelevant.

I'd be interested to know if that site has suffered from Google's Penguin update? It seems to be fit the category of what they are targeting.

our own onsite content and SEO is all good.

we're just trying to increase the number of links to our site (not bad at the moment, but you can always have more!). i just wanted to make sure i'm not penalising my site by getting links from lower PA sites.

very much aware that SEO is a bit like snake-oil - not kidding ourselves here! but since taking a more targeted approach to it we've vastly increased organic traffic and are starting to appear reasonably high for a wide range of important search terms. we just want V2 to be even higher for even more search terms.

you may even see the fruits of our labour advertised on here in the next month or two 8)
