My father-in-law has an old morris minor that he's thinking of selling. Thing is, i reckon the number plate on it is worth as much as the car!!
I tried one of these online companies who give you a price that they'll pay you if they manage to sell it - £1,000. So, my question is, based on the offer of £1k, whats it really worth? Plate is 710 UXS.

It's worth more to Ulysses Xavier Somero than it is to Duncan MacLeod no doubt.

Am I missing something, aside from being old, why would that be desirable? Seems an odd set of initials.

Absolutely. Maybe my question should be reworded as - what mark-up do these companies typically aim for? That would give me a better estimate of average market value. Obviously, its worth a lot more to some people than others if you are looking at the letters only. However, it does effectively say IOU XS which someone of a certain extrovert(?) nature may like too...

Also, in NI all normal number plates are letters then numbers e.g. abc 1234 or xyz 78 etc. Having numbers before letters may float someones boat....
TBH i don't really understand how these plates can command such a price but I'm not going to argue if my father-in-law can benefit from it.

They can be popular for people that don't want the real age of their vehicle to be known, coaches and taxis being a good example.
Is the car MOTed? I don't think you can transfer the plate without one, check on the DVLA website.

I sold mine on eBay for about double what the plate companies offered to buy it off me for.

Cheers loxy - thats the kind of answer i was looking for!

Yes, its MOTd so no problems there. Just had a look at the next DVLA registration auction and the reserve prices quoted suggest double is not too far off.

Sell the numberplate and car together. Instead of short term (tiny ££) greed that could lead to the destruction of a car that is fast becoming a faded memory.

You also need to check its transferable, IIRC it's written on the V5 if it isn't.
Selling it yourself is a bit of a PITA as the paperwork, fees and finding a buyer that trusts you to do the transfer can be difficult, the process is not as simple as you would think.
It's also worth noting that what they offer to buy it for and what they sell it on your behalf for are quite different.
My plate was valued at £1500 by them, they offered me £350 to buy it directly and I sold it privately for £750 (including the ~£120 fees for the transfer).

The car will receive another age related plate which will be non transferable.

If you flog the plate, won't the DVLA give you another from the same era? That one could be even better!

Seems slightly daft... surely you have to pay to re-register it? Otherwise isn't that basically a massive potential money making operation!?

just on with changing mine at mo. Last time I got the original plate back, so imagine the same this time. Hope so as still got old plates. I still have to keep old car until change over just incase DVLA need to inspect it. I would try to sell as a complete lot at some decent car auction assuming its not a bag of nails.

Thanks hora. Greed is not the term i'd use - glad to see your usual use of subtlety is still at play!
The whole reason for this venture is to fund my father-in-laws purchase of a Morris Traveller which is even rarer (and far more expensive). The current Morris will go to a collector as its in excellent condition.
Ideally if we can get a bit more for the car with the plate on it, rather than splitting the two and only getting a marginal gain, then we'll go down that route.

Yes, and for a very good reason! Most Moggies don't disintegrate with a bit of rot here and there. 😀

DVLA will replace with a dateless plate, but you can't sell that one on.
