So you publish it - then what? You just sit and wait for people to find it? Does Amazon make some kind of effort to show shoppers new stuff, or is it like Google where you end up languishing on the 300th page of results forever unless you know how to play the game?

There's lots of things you can do to boost visibility. Amazon own Good Reads, where you can post your bicycle related erotica, and get it reviewed. People can then buy said saddle-worrying essay from the 'Zon.
