Hi, a friend of mine has just started building a new house from the ground up.  He's looking to try secure the site with a pair of outdoor security cameras. The cameras would be preferably battery/solar powered but if there is a base station then he has power available for that.  I think 4K cameras would be best so maybe something like the Arlo range?

He's considering getting a 5G wireless broadband until such a time that fibre broadband will become available.

Do any of you have any experience with this sort of requirement?

Thanks

Not a direct response but I've notice a couple of building sites around me used these "Daleks".

Most of the (cheaper) systems I'm aware of need  WiFi, that should work with a 5G dongle but that would need to be weatherproofed in some way depending what he has on site

Most building sites I see are protected by those CCTV Daleks - I'd be looking to rent / buy a set of those for the duration of the build.

Local pub got done out over about 4 weeks recently. They had some sort of hired, automated sentry system that scanned the site perimeter for movement with automatic lights and CCTV. A bit like this.

Where we live there is no hope of fibre broadband and our mobile signal is patchy, so  I use starlink. at £75 a month it's expensive, but it's incredibly fast. I think they have deal on at present with much cheaper hardware than usual.

Cameras don't really deter, they'll nick them as well. He needs to physically secure materials and tools to avoid theft. Even if you do get clear images of theft the police won't be interested.

That is the long an short of it.

Is it middle of nowhere or a built up area ?
Anywhere to stick a caravan ? Unless you have someone on site 24/7 then stuff will disappear, including the cameras.

Not quite the same thing...we had an extension done last year and lived in the front garden in a static caravan. Had a couple of outdoor Blink cameras which worked really well in all weathers.

That said ... as above ...

We did have an incident...I have it all on camera footage. Bloke jumped out of his van and walked in early morning (about 6am-ish) with a torch for a nosey, I think probably another builder on his way to a job. What actually scared the guy off was our dog waking up and barking in the caravan. Good dog - she got some treats that morning.

The camera did alert too, so if you were willing and able to head to site at short notice I'd say the best plan is make sure you can get good alerts when something untoward is happening. Then head to site with your dog. The police are next to useless these days.

Given that any site crim would likely be in a nicked/cloned van I can't see CCTV being a huge help.

We've had 4 or 5 cars broken into in our car park, CCTV everywhere, signs everywhere, didn't stop them. But I guess from an insurance point of view, you're ticking boxes if you ever decide to try and claim.

Our friends have quite a few cameras on their site. They now have a lot of footage of people wandering onto the site and helping themselves to "scrap" metal. Sometimes it is waste metal but a few ladders have gone missing too. I think you need something else if you actually want to stop thieves. A big metal box to keep tools in might be a start

Cameras won't help to secure a site, they may record your valuable kit being nicked though. Scrotes don't care about being filmed they know plod won't even look at it. Small caravan on site, random lights on and off,  proximity sensors with lights and barking dog recording may help.

Lots of sites here that I see in the middle of nowhere have those daleks. Scare the life out of you on a night ride.
