Hi, Calling Tweed Valley folk...I know there must be loads of families /kids in this position, and there's a lot of variables here, not least uncertainty over the coming academic year, but here goes...
Our son and one of his riding buddies are supposed to start HND in sports development and coaching at Borders College in August - depending on if or how they decide to run the course. Time is running out for securing rental accommodation for them, more so because they want to live around Inners/Walkers/Peebles rather than Gala - two days of his week will be coached riding there (if that bit of the course can go ahead), and they want as much riding time as possible. There's precious little private rental around, particularly with space for bikes, and buying a small flat is a non starter.
Apart from the usual outlets (letting agencies, estate agents) are there any other means of finding accommodation? Are post office windows with cards in them a thing any more? - we live in west yorkshire, thanks to CV19 driving up and having a look is out anyway! Are there community facebook pages with accommodation? Or does anyone have a static they want to let out!?
Any advice welcome!

There are some fb private letting groups but they seem to be full of complaining tenants. When I had a similar accom issue studying in London I was so keen to go I borrowed a car and slept on a friends floor miles away. On our induction day everyone was introducing themselves v politely, I asked everyone for somewhere to stay. Anyway, it worked I got something. I just had a duvet in the car as a backup.

Funnily enough now I really appreciate the start I got and have always helped out tenants, now being a landlord.

I know somebody who has taken in lodgers from the BASE course before, in Innerleithen. I will ask her if she is doing again.

Send a wee message to iCycles in Inners, Steve has his finger on the pulse valley-wise, he may know someone with a room.

As much as i like living in peebles...

Gala is probably a nicer place to be a student.

Thanks folks,
Appreciate that Hels, and ill drop Steve a message.
Although they're keener on Inners area, its a combination of being familiar with the place and the riding on the doorstep. They could of course end up being gala party animals...

Maybe a look at airbnbs for the area with a speculative message asking about a long term let? Some may be up for it especially if their income so far this year has been unreliable.

This came up in my street in Peebles. Having been inside the flat I can attest that it is not the brightest and airiest, but it does have good secure bike storage.
