Need to fit a small shelf for shower stuff. The walls are 10mm thick shower/bathroom boards with plasterboard behind.
Do I need rawl plugs or will screws directly into the shower/bathroom board be sufficient?
We did something similar and you can buy special plasterboard rawlplugs and screw kits which may be what you need
I screwed directly into the shower board/respetex with a small pilot hole then stainless screws
stainless screws and a retainer like a rawl plug but designed for aqua board or plaster board.
put silicone into the hole before inserting the plug. Put silicone down the plug. Apply thing and screw away.
the silicone will improve your odds of keeping the aquaboard’s waterproofness patent.
Plasterboard rawl plugs won't be long enough. They're designed to open up behind the plasterboard which is usually 12mm thick.
This is 10mm showerboard plus 12mm plasterboard.
My mistake.
Will that work on MDF showerboards?
I never fit mdf cored boards but I don't imagine they're that different from the ply ones in terms of fixing into, basically you'd get a really strong fix just by screwing straight into it.
Ended up just drilling a 3mm pilot hole, filled with silicone, then used the supplied stainless steel screws. Seems to hold well. Thanks for the advice.
MDF showerboards
ah. When I hear ‘shower board’ I think of aquaboard and similar concrete/fibreglass foam sandwiches. Didn’t know there were ones with MDF cores.
as you’ve found, MDF holds screws fairly well. Though I’d wonder about anything more substantial than a soap holder or shower head rail thing.

On a related question, I'm planning a new shower enclosure build at the moment - what kind of backing would folk use behind plastic bathroom wall panels, and do I need additional membrane up around the tray to keep it watertight?
