Branded a coward by Trump, suspended without pay and on trial for his actions, or lack of them.

How do you think you would react in that situation? Can anyone really know until they are face to face with it?

Personally I think his employers should take some of the blame, they clearly employed the wrong person for the job.

I thought he had won an award or two for being good at his job. What he may or may not have been good at is taking on a nutter with a rifle when not wearing full body armour and backed up by a bunch of other heavily armed and armoured people.

The problem is the "good guy with a gun" myth means he has to be treated harshly. Especially by all the politicians many of whom were draft dodgers who now dream of themselves being the sheriff of the wild west.

You seem to have already judged him (based on initial media reports and the Sheriff/Trump comments).

If you're talking about a situation where I was employed to protect people, given extensive training and carrying a gun then yeah I'd hope if I had a clear idea of what was going on and an opportunity to stop it I would, regardless of my own safety, but ofc you never really know until it actually happens (that said if you have any real doubt if you'd hesitate you shouldn't be in that role). If I had real doubts that I'd be able to respond effectively then I would think the responsibility would be mine to inform my employers rather than blame them for not weeding me out in training and subsequent evaluations.

I don't think there's enough info out there about the Deputy's exact actions at the moment to condemn him in this case, let alone background about his training and any concerns he may have raised about his role.

I believe he was suspended, then resigned.

I haven't condemned him, but his employer did suspend him without pay, so there is enough evidence out there for his employer to take that action. Also if anyone knows his training background or concerns he may have raised, that would also be his employer.
