The OH is considering a scooter, I have no idea whatsoever about these things other than quadrophenia, and I doubt that is what she's on about.
Only wants it for work really, she cycles mostly at present but work is taking her slightly further away and 'up more hills' according to her.
Does she need a licence for a cetain size engine? I see plenty kids riding with L plates, insurance etc? any scooterists out there?
Check her car licence, if she got it pre 1998 (i think) it should have category P, in which case she can ride a 50cc without L plates, but will need to do a CBT to ride a 125cc.
If she doesn't have categroy P then she will need a CBT even for a 50cc
Should bo OK on a 50cc with a car license, but I'd STRONGLY RECOMMEND doing a CBT anyway. It's asking for trouble to just get on and ride.
50cc is fine for town work, but if it's more than say 6-7 miles or involves faster roads, she'll be a lot less hassled on a 125cc
One word of warning - Avoid the cheap new taiwaneese/Chinees scooters and spend the same money on a Jap or preferably Italin scooter. Vespa, Gilera, Piaggio, Honda would be my choice, and in that order.
You'll pay more for a nice vespa used, but they are made of metal, handle stop and go better than anything else and keep it serviced and looked after and you'll hardly loose a penny on it. Plus they are the best looking. 🙂
You can ride up to a 125 on L plates having done the basic CBT test and training.
However getting more training than CBT would be a good idea. Insurance can be very expensive and you really need proper kit to ride in - even done basically and cheaply it can amount to a few hundred quid.
Electric assisted bicycle instead?
They're horrible things.
Get a motorbike. She'll live longer.
TJ, 50cc can be ridden on a car license, with no L plates, no CBT, and you can carry a passenger. But like I said, I'd do the CBT anyway. Daft not to.
Electric assisted bicycle instead?
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do
Or do not
There is no try.
They're horrible things.
If you mean scooters, you're very, very, very wrong indeed. And very narrow minded.
If you mena electric bikes, yes, I agree. 🙂
No car license, so CBT it is. Roads are all 30mph max round her work/home area. She won't look at a motorbike! Looks like a few quid investment is needed here, so we will have to sit down and see how serious she is about this.
Cheers all.
Can't agree that there horrible things, half the population of Europe can't be wrong can they??
To me they seem very practical, serve a purpose and keep most of Italy & Spain on the move.
Yes, scooters are very practical and very easy to live with. I've had 4 now, currently got a Vespa GT200. So many advantages. 🙂
