We will be in touch
just had a chap on the phone who claimed to be from a company that are doing work for microsoft. he said that my computer was vulnerable and that he had called to talk me through the fix.
i take it this chap was upto no good yes?
Think about it, all the MS product users in the world are the going to ring them all or send a fix out on an auto patch?
yes
good its just that i told him to go fek himself but then felt bad about it.
I had a similar call earlier today. I told him that I was not sure which computer he was talking about and when he couldn't confirm any information I politely informed him that I was using Linux as an operation system. He hung up on me 🙁
I am quite sad that I only managed to keep him on the phone for 5 min, I was hoping to try for 1 hour with some really silly questions like you see in those IT help emails.
I am pretty sure he was up to no good, though I am not sure what he was trying to do.
Nick
then felt bad about it
The only reason to feel bad is if you didn't keep them occupied for long enough. Some good ways to keep them busy here - http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/ive-got-one-of-those-computer-scammers-on-the-line-right-now
Two things.
1) if you have to ask yourself, "is this a scam?" - it's a scam.
2) this one is -very- common right now. They get you to look at Event Viewer for errors (there's always some innocuous messages), use this as "proof" to persuade you to give them access to your PC via LogMeIn, then install their malware and / or tell you that it'll cost you £lots to repair and can we have your credit card details please.
The correct response to this bunch is, I believe, "get ****ed you scamming bunch of donkey-felchers, I hope your balls turn square and rot at the corners."
