Currently using an old iPhone 6 as a work phone and the battery life is terrible.
The battery diagnostics say it's 98% healthy which I don't think is correct based on how fast the battery drains.
Either way, any suggestions on how to eek the max out of it? Low Power mode is the obvious on, anything else I would be doing?

Turn the screen brightness down and don't sit there checking it every 5 minutes. Switch off anything you're not using - Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, etc.

Mine is a 6S and the battery is terrible, generally I kill all the apps and put it in flight mode when I go out, only way I can ensure I have any battery left if I need to use it.

Get a Samsung.

I got fed up of my iPhone 5s dying on cold rides, would go from 70% to **** all, mates iphone 7 did the same.

Had Samsung s7 for over 5 years now, still going well.

check the battery app to see what is actually draining the battery if it is listed as an app?
Use a power bank until work replaces what is clearly useless for what you need.

I wouldn't recommend Samsung, I had an S4 I think and after three years the battery just wouldn't last more than about 5 hours no matter what I did

I use an old iPhone SE for Navigation purposes and the battery is and always was awful, especially running GPS.
I bought a battery case for about £20.
It doubles the thickness of the phone but the battery life is now epic.

I can’t say I’m happy that work bought me a Samsung after years of using iphones. But the battery life is in a totally different league. If I was careful, I could get two days out of mine. I got about 1/2 day out of my iPhone 6s.

For the sake of a tenner, change the battery anyway.

How long since you did a reset without restoring from a backup?

I had issues with my 6 for ages until it was pointed out that restore from backup restores the iOS data too (hence reinstalling any rogue stuff).
Get all your data backed up to the cloud in its own right and then you can just start afresh and your data will be there automatically.

I found an extra half a day in my knackered battery once whatever was constantly running on the system was stopped.

@jamesoz if you have the mapping loaded on the phone for navigating then airplane mode is your friend for battery life extension. Switch to airplane mode then fire up the navigation only the GPS will be drawing power not wifi, bluetooth and background updates etc.

If you're loading mapping on the fly it's going to eat battery life while running the GPS.

I had a 6S with a brand new battery and it still died very quickly so I gave up and bought an XS. We have recently bought our girls 7s and the battery life is vastly better (running current OS).

Rather than spend money on new batteries and/or battery cases/power banks, sell it on Ebay and get a 7?

Buy a new battery. £8 and you just drop it in; no cracking the case with special tools.

Unless it was an S6 or higher?

Thanks for all the suggestion, particularly the "buy a Samsung" comment.
The hope was to do this for almost no money as the phone is being used as a stop-gap for 3 months. I was thinking settings and software not hardware.
Anyway, I suspect a powerpack or case are the way forward, or just keep it constantly plugged in.

Or buy a higher capacity iphone 6 battery for £15 and change it yourself?, takes all of 15mins at most

Please could someone post a link for a decent source of a replacement battery for an iPhone SE. Thanks.

iFixit though a bit pricey have a good reputation and they are not selling recycled batteries.

I have bought from iFixit before, as you say they are good but the battery is already £17 and then there is the overseas postage.

Turn off notifications (the ones that light up the screen every time a whats app / email arrives) for stuff if you're part of any chat groups / mailing lists.

background app refresh off, limit notifications to only apps you want (or none), make sure auto brightness is on. If you're using google maps download the maps to your device to save data usage.

there is the overseas postage.

Plus it's a battery which limits the carrier pool.

Let’s face it, it’s a five/six year old phone! No phone of that age is going to have a battery that will hold a decent charge all day, it’s just not possible.
My iP6 was showing definite wear on the battery, around 70%, when I replaced it last October, and it was five years old then; I was pretty happy that it had lasted that long.
Find someone who can put a replacement in, or get a new phone.

Download the Accubattery app for a better judge of the battery health.

Had Samsung s7 for over 5 years now, still going well

Also a long term S7 user. Brilliant phone but have replaced the battery once. An S10e looks like the next one to get. No edge screen, waterproof, not flashy or pushing the envelope.
