Used to use Avonline here until they managed to run some copper wire up to my remote hovel.
Was expensive, but paid for by my company.
Terrible lag, so no use for video conferencing or online game playing.
Dropped off during heavy rain.
Good for data transfer and email, which was mainly what I needed it for.
No substitute for the real thing but miles better than the alternative.
Found Avonline a good company to deal with.

Video conferencing and game playing arent really on the cards.

Work duties, but we are not in a priority area. Starting to have problems with office365 updates in particular. Just how terrible is that for general web browsing, downloading documents, uploading video and photos?

I found it pretty good for general business use. Upload is much slower than download IIRC.

I have friends who use it quite a bit on yachts. Its ok for text based emails and downloading weather files but anything else (especially web/images) can get expensive very quickly.

I suggest you do your updates when you are in a decent signal area / free wifi.

FYI I have 3 mobile wifi dongle which works very well and I hear the new 4g ones are very good. I used it instead of BT for a while. You have to watch data use there too though and of course live in an area with decent signal.

Seems pretty expensive.... I live 15 minutes out of Bristol and usually get between 800kbps and 1.2Mbps so I have considered it as my internet struggles with much more than mail but I just can't bring myself to shell out that much... yet......

Bandwidth is fine, but latency is 700ms+. Makes for pretty irritating web browsing to be honest.

Well I have two wireless hotspots. If you can get coverage they are great. I have a EE 3G/4G hotspot which I use when in the UK and globagig wireless hotspot outside the UK. Both good business tools.

Satellite will always be slow with latency.

Look at maybe 4G or some other places have rural wireless systems in place that cover them.
