old pc board socket labelled sata2 - ok to plug in a drive labelled sata3? - think backwards compatible but checking before drives me crazy if doesn't work (understand speed issues)

Perfectly fine.
The sata 2 and 3 interfaces are both higher speed than a mechanical drive can run at anyway so you won't notice any difference in performance.
