We have a Samsung smart tv and have a 1TB hard drive plugged into a USB port on which we record stuff. Every couple of months the hard drive develops a fault which the TV tries, unsuccessfully, to repair and so we end up formatting the hard drive. Anybody had this and is there a solution?

Try giving Samung technical a ring, I find them one of the more helpful companies to deal with.
I have been having problems with Sony and Goodmans hard drive recorders which have both been software issues, yours may just need an update. (Depending on your problem)
Actually a bit more googling suggests it may be a more common problem which may or may not be fixable through Ubuntu. Might try that next time it fails.
