I'm looking at doing a duathlon and am curious to know if there are any mtb shoes that you can comfortably run in or if there are any trainers that have SPD fitment?

What are the distances concerned?

I'm inclined to say you'll do less damage to yourself cycling in trainers than you will running in mountain bike shoes.

what he said though I wouldn't attempt either.

I doubt you could choose 2 shoes with more opposite purposes/attributes.

Did an off road duathlon or two a few years ago, I wore my fell running shoes and put some old school toe clips on the bike. Another year I switched footwear. For speed the toe clips obviously made for a shorter transition, presumably you'd loose some efficiency on the bike with the flexibility. Didn't notice anything though as I was breathing through my backside!

It depends on the distance. Anything over about 2O minutes on the bike and it's worth changing shoes. That said I've used trainers (screw shoes) on DX-type flats on off-road duathlons and Winter triathlons with MTB legs around an hour with excellent results - mainly because I remained upright thanks to the flats while many around me crashed.

there was a guy on the TV the other day doing a sprint triathalon around Canary Wharf who rode his bike in his running trainers - the course was technical so he didn't lose any time on the bike and gained a few seconds on the changeover.
