Just about to get my Blizzard rebuilt having only ridden road for the last 5 years or so.
are there any routes out of town avoiding roads as much as possible. as going up to Norwood etc involves quite a bit of road??

Harewood? Bit limited but nice to watch red kites circling above you 🙂

There's not a great deal, lots of cobbling together and cheeky footpaths.
There are a few bridleways up to Norwood but they aren't very good and, again, are a bit of a mishmash.
For me the best riding anything like local is up at 'treewick.

Take the Greenway to Ripley,
That opens up loads of stuff towards either Ripon or Pately and beyond,
A good OS map will be your friend
Or you can loop round toward Knaresborough
