I think we just took a direct lightning strike. There is a conductor on the roof. My router appears to be dead. No lights come on. Its an Orange livebox. I can't see any external fuse or reset button. Is it just a case of phoning my provider and asking for a new one?

This happened to my in-laws a few weeks ago. TheIR provider (BT) replaced it FOC.

Is it worth getting a surge protector for stuff like this?

Good. I will give them a call in the morning.

I think you'll find it is no longer an Orange LiveBox.

Does lightning ever strike twice?

I was driving home from Aberdeen this evening and the sky over Fife was lit up a couple of times by some very bright lightning strikes. Very impressive but maybe not so good really close up!

Our old router expired in the same way.
