Hi all,
messing around dreaming about our summer hols, and am planning to drive from Roscoff to near Sarlat in the Dordogne.
I did my usual - put in details into the RAC planner and it's come up with a route. Ineviatably there's a 'sticky patch' between Poitiers and Limoges, so I then went onto Multimap.
The new RAC planner obviously uses Multimap. The road numbers on Multimap are now different to my 2008 AA French Big Road Atlas. I've checked on Michelin, Google Earth and there's a huge variety of road number designations.
The Michelin gives two road numbers of which I presume there's an old number and a new??
From Roscoff - Rennes my printed map gives N12 as the main dual carriageway. Michelin calls it N12 or E50. Multimap gives it as E50
I presume the E no's are the new road designations?
Possibly more importantly:
On Multimap, it looks like there's a new road, the E62 that carves a straight line through beyond Poitiers which would be an excellent straight line for us to take. I have no idea of it's type of road
i.e. is it dual carriageway? cos it would be a good road for us.
I'm also aware that the French are very good at modernising and building new roads, so i suspect this could be one.
Anyone any ideas of a definitive current road situation?
who do you trust??
Were not going for a while, but as indicated above, a quick " get into holiday mode" with a cuppa and browse the atlas has left me utterly confused!
cheers

Try Google maps and take a look for yourself ?
Hi
If it's an E road it's very likely to be a motorway.
Have a look on mappy with the option "fastest" it usually get you on the motorway, expensive but very fast.
Simonfb: Have tried that! I've just had another look, i think Google maps uses the same source as the Michelin ones.
juan: thanks, I've had another look and I'm not sure. I thought it might be dual carriageways, but having another look on google maps, it's not the same as their A roads.
I've taken another look - having just put the route in again to thr RAC route planner, and looking around the route, it really does look like the E62 is dualled all the way......
It's not me, the info is definitely confusing!
p'raps I'll talk to the RAC route planners if i can find a link.....
cheers
Q
I suppose the basic question to be answered : Is Multimap the most up-to-date?
I'll see if I can find out!

"E" designations are European road numbers, presumably supposed to be consistent across some monster pan-European road map. "N" numbers are the local French numbering system, so the same road can be given either designation. The N's are more likely to actually be signed on the ground!
stevomcd: Ahhh..... thanks, at least that's sorted one thing out!
It looks like Multimap are giving the European numbers.
Now just want to find out how good the direct route using the E62 is from Nante to Limoge ( and if it actually exists!) or better to do some 'A' Motorways and link through later.
cheers

sorry, I meant the satellite view where you can see an actual photo ๐
SfB: ok....will take a look, good point. Was just looking at low res. for the roads as shown on atlas.
Ahh.... I owe Juan an apology I thought 'mappy' was a typo for map ๐ณ
It looks like the link's been timed out, but I've just googled it and started looking - the route given also tells where the speed cameras are - impressive!!!
thanks people, didn't know of its' existance.
thanks

EDIT: Just looked at the route plan, that is really good, I like the layout, in fact that's excellent. I have now learnt! thanks guys
Q
Yes looks like it timed out. I sent it with Poitiers to Limoges plotted.
Here's the site homepage link for everyone......

Mappy looks a lot like viamichelin which seems pretty useful as well. Well, it's the one I use when dreaming of holiday plans, glad I am not alone in that pastime.
Tracker: it's good to dream!

The E in front of a number relates to a European route, these are routes that travel through various countries. The idea being that if you want to travel from say calais to gibraltar you would only need to follow the relevent E numbered route, for the sake of argument lets say the Calais to gibraltar is E1 you leave calais and just keep following the E1 signs and eventually you will end up in gibraltar. Next to the E numbers will be the road numbers given by the host country. The M6 has an E number given to because carlise is the start of one of these european routes.
izakimak: thanks - that's really good.
I'll have a good dig around those links tomorrow - off to bed now.
Night all!
