My wife wanted a dog.

"Fine", I said, "But don't expect me to walk it, or anything"

That was 2005. Had to get the dog "put down" today due to massive chest tumour. Absolutely f'ing gutted.

We knew it was coming, and took her to her favourite place yesterday where she ran around like a pup again. Bad night last night, then a very peaceful and calm killing this morning. All rooms in the house, and adjacent woodland inexplicably dusty.

Dogs: they **** you up!

Sentimental video for those into such things:

It looks like you've all had some good times together. Remember those.

Crumbs man, I feel for you. It happened here a while ago and I still think it's her whenever I hear a noise around the house.

Very sorry for your loss, you're sad now but on balance life is always better for a dog in it.

The hardest part of owning a dog is saying goodbye.

We lost our old boy almost two years ago now but almost a year ago, we adopted a 4.5 year old bull lurcher from a rescue centre.

When we first lost him, we'd wait outside the house until the other one of us got home so we didn't have to go into an empty house alone.

Our biggest reservation about taking on another dog was knowing we'd have to go through that again and, with rescuing an older dog, it would be sooner.

But there's no better welcome home from a shit day at work, than that welcome you get from a dog.

The furry little buggers really do get to you don't they.

So sorry OP, sucks. Loved your photos, looked like a wee little ripper!

Ours is in the same boat, not sure where the nine years we had her have gone. Still plenty of bounce in her but, we'll have to make the same decision as you OP, she's riddled with bad things. Oh balls!!

Thank you all.

Spaniels do, indeed, rock!

They all rock. Healing thoughts duly sent.

She’ll get a warm welcome from Fatty McTavish, my old Westie Cross, who went for his longest walk 10 years ago.

Me and the mrs welled up reading this and hugged Jarvis Sprocker this morning. Hate to think of the day my best mate will leave me.

Lovely girl.  Sounds like she was very well loved.  So very sorry she’s gone.

We had a spaniel when I was growing up.  Amazing dogs.
