Was just reading about Pete Seeger in Joe Boyd's book White Bicycles, great insight into what really happened in the 60's with jazz, folk and psychedelia, interesting.
The world is less caring without him.
If I had a Hammer.....
Apparently, when Dylan "went electric" at the Newport Folk Festival in '63, Pete Seeger threatened to "cut the power cable with an axe" for Bob's "betrayal" of folk music.
What a pillock.
Finger in the ear everyone - "Aaaaah, leeeeaving of Liveeeeerpoooooollllll...."
The 'best' song about the futility of war and how leaders fail;
Maybe you're still walking, you're still talking,
You'd like to keep your health.
But every time I read the papers, that old feeling comes on,
We're waist deep in the Big Muddy
And the big fool says to push on.
Mr Woppit,
Your statement is not entirely correct.
The sound quality of Dylan's electric set was so poor that the words were inaudible. Seeger, having challenged the mixing desk soundman , was told where to go, to which Seeger replied if he had an axe then he would cut the power cables.
Nothing to do with any "betrayal".
And it was '65 not '63.
damn you and your facts charleshenryll, MrWoppit will have to look else where to besmirch him now.
Mr Woppit,

😆
Damn. I'll have to think of something now... (starts furiously looking through Wikipedia). 😳
At any rate, it's salutary how everybody seems to have a different story of what happened...

I wonder who these "purists" were?
In any event, it does seem it wasn't Mr Seeger. R.I.P., then. 8)
They played some of his songs on r2 today, we used to sing them in music class at primary school
I'd read Joe Boyd's White Bicycles if I were you, his explanation of what happened seems more plausible, especially as he was there when the so called axe incident happened. In fact he even moved the cable and the axe was being used in a folk song about chopping trees. At any rate, it's salutary how everybody seems to have a different story of what happened...
Bah!
