Although 77 is not a desperately young age, it still feels young in today's terms. A legendary commentator and one of the voices of my life in sport.

He was the voice of football for me growing up.

Terrible shame, was the voice of football for many years (although I did find his commentary pretty poor for the most part).

Voice? He was a regular in the Bank of Friendship, Highbury, on Tuesdays in the 1990s with Harry Redknapp, and you could not escape his booming voice. Used to drive me nuts but he seemed a decent enough sort, had nice sheepskin coats and he died too young. He did have a very big head which must have helped him retain all those football facts.

Another part of my childhood gone. There are certain voices I will always associate with certain sports; Bill McLaren with rugby, Murray Walker with motor racing, David Coleman with athletics, Eddie Waring with rugby league etc. With football it will always be John Motson.
