Do you work in China?
The guff about not dissing the company is fairly standard stuff.
Not accessing non-work related interwebs during working hours doesn't sound unreasonable. They're paying you to work not keep up on Facebook?
in practical terms unenforceable, but most companies have something similar stuffed into the employment contracts.
basically, don't libel the company or blab any commercial secrets and you're ok. if you started saying "company X is bollocks" whilst being paid by company X and at your desk etc etc then expect a wrist slap
also don't take the piss and spend all day on singletrack (unless you're on yer mobile which IT depts can do precisely squat about)
Oh, to have a pseudonym, to be able to divulge...
No, not China. Not til the outsourcing.
I know of people who have been sacked for a combination of Facebook and discussing confidential work based information.
It implies we've all been banned from t' internets at all times,
How'd you come to that conclusion? The title says explicitly social networking sites/blogs?
If was employing people I'd be pretty upset if they spent a load of time on STW... 😳
All the usual guff is fine. The first sentence seems ambiguous to us because we're bakers/chefs/kps etc with no access other than on our personal devices, on our breaks.
I appreciate it may be a business wide policy, but it could do with being rewritten.
Should say, not particularly concerned.
I've seen that policy at lots of places. I bet it's a knee jerk reaction to another issue. Very difficult to enforce since most people will use their mobile devices nowadays and for most younger people it will feel like an incredibly unreasonable policy to apply.
I don't know where you read you're banned from Tinterwebz
Reading that I'd say your banned from Social media and personal blogs.
Nothing about forums/websites/porn
We are not allowed social network sites when we are allowed "private" internet use in our lunch breaks.
We can access eBay though.
The rules are enforced quite firmly in the civil service..... 😳
Can I Flounce yet?
The rules are enforced quite firmly in the civil service....
changing wikipedia entries looks like it's fair game though 😉
My employer has just unlocked social media for all employees.
MoreCash, that's what I think they're saying. That we can't access social media, in our own time, while on the premises.
Is "as work" defined anywhere? Pretty unreasonable to stop you getting on facebook/whatever while on your break on your own device.
The first sentence seems ambiguous to us because we're bakers/chefs/kps etc with no access other than on our personal devices, on our breaks.
Company wide policy protects the company from any whingers trying to claim some people get better terms than others/.
Haven't you just violated it?
Look at the good side, it doesn't mention anything about looking at porn! 😀
From the "with immediate effect" header I'd guess that this has been thrown together and circulated in a hurry in response to something specific happening somewhere in the organisation (or outside - i.e. someone has embarrassed the company on facebook / twitter).
Not vastly different to what many other organisations have to be fair.
wwaswas - having this site open in your browser for 5 hours a day is clearly more important than fiddling with Wikipedia!
I'm pretty certain that what's written there is almost identical to our restrictions at work. I'm fairly sure that social media is blocked by IT anyway, and not dissing the company on t'interwebz just seems like a reasonable expectation, especially if that can affect relationships with clients; as ours include many of the country's largest charities, it's only to be expected.
We can't access blogs/social media (or gambling, game, media hosting or file sharing sites either), still leaves most things though!
I'm moving on, I'm home now and it doesn't bloody matter.
Our place runs two networks - the desks are hard wired in and connectivity locked down to only access sitee that our proxies will accept.
We also have a wifi network with a sign up policy, that allows us to connect personal devices (phones/tablets) - we still have to be careful of where we surf. Can't surf places deemed inappropriate - urban dictionary seems to be hated. We can get to mail and Facebook etc.
We're not allowed to diss the company on any site at any time. Them is the rules apparently. Laptops etc are pretty well locked down - encrypted, no admin rights, no USB, no DVD, everything we use it for, including surfing from home on our own internet connectivity is logged and monitored.
