Water isn't really beading off my waterproof jacket after 2 years of use. Any recommendations for something to help reproof it? I'm thinking along the lines of something you chuck in the washing machine with it. It's gore-tex if that makes any difference.

Nothing I have tried has worked, really. Bitumen may do it. 😀

I've found the Nikwax spray one quite good.

Wet your jacket out, spray on, leave for a few mins then wipe it down to remove excess and makes sure it's everywhere.

Leave to dry outside but while it's still damp whack in the tumblr dryer on low for 15-20 mins

Works for my Rab jacket, doesn't last as long as the original DWR though

Nikwax wash in DWR fits your bill. Check Tesco direct for a good deal on a bottle of that and the tech wash bought together. Wash the jacket in the techwash, then the wash in DWR, and then either tumble dry or iron on lowest setting.

I would read the wash label thoroughly first too.....not all goretex likes wash in re proofed. not all jackets etc can be tumble dried. Some have to drip dry, some have to have spray on re treatment over wash in. Just be aware too, you can over apply the treatments so only use the amounts it says on the bottles and under no circumstances was it in any bio wash liquid.....one wash accidentally using telsco blue lid wash liquid ( turns out their blue lid stuff is still a bio wash!!) knackered a newish eVent jacket.

Thompson's Water Seal. It didn't harm my 18 y.o. Sprayway jacket.

Nikwax Tech wash & reproofer 1ltr deal from tesco's for £15, seems to work well +1
Just washed/reproofed my winter jacket & waterproof short, shorts are back to there ultra slippy selves again, so I'd recommend it
(Remember to run a empty hot wash cycle to clear out any build up of detergents 1st, & tend to do one after too, to wash away any leftover reproofer)

Aldi sell a spray on. Anyone used it?

To be honest, I'd try the Aldi one long before I bought Nikwax again.

I've bought the Aldi one a few times. It works OK, but you can go through a fair bit to get a decent coating. For the price though, you can't go wrong. And it's useful for doing bits that most warrant it, like the front of your jacket, or toes of your shoes. I'm currently looking for a proper wash-in solution though, mostly to see if it has better longevity.

They all seem pretty poor

Granger's is less rubbish than the others

Washing and (only if the label says it's safe) tumble trying is good for the waterproof coating and for the garment's performance generally, despite what many people will tell you. Try that first. An extra rinse cycle doesn't hurt.

If it needs it, reproofing spray immediately after washing is what all high-end manufacturers and GORE-TEX themselves recommend, not wash-in. Just buy whatever brand you can get your hands on. It'll never be as good as a new or regularly-washed jacket but you'll get some performance back for a while.

Arc'teryx's website has a good video about waterproof garment care.

Thomson waterseal (not the Ultra version).

Stinks for a day or two ... then better than new.
