Looking at getting my wife's iPhone screen replaced due to it being cracked pretty badly, can anyone tell me if it's as good as new once done and is there anything I should know before going ahead?

I'm in Leeds so if anyone knows a reputable, reliable place to get it done, that would be great, too.

A timely thread...! Which iPhone is it? I’m asking as I replaced the screen on my 6 yesterday, having bought a replacement screen on eBay, with tools for about £20, and fitted it in an hour and a half, following an instructional video on YouTube.

This works for the 6 onwards, as they have screw on lcd screens rather than the older ones where the screen is bonded in. The only thing though is to make sure you get an apple screen, rather than a copy as they don’t always have the same functional sensitivity.

I replaced the screen on my Motorola, it was fairly straightforward. There was an instructional video on Youtube; worth having a look as it might be an easy fix yourself. I just used a sharp knife and glue that I found in the kitchen!

I bought the new screen for about fifteen quid, I'm sure it's not a great quality one but it works fine. Perhaps sliding my finger roudn the screen to text is not as accurate as it used to be, but it was cheaper/easier than buying a new phone.

There is a little phone shop in Headingley, just along from library and the Head of Steam.
We’ve had a couple of screens done there before and they have been spot on. Quite cheap too.

He did an awesome job on my niece's iPhone and mailed it back to France. Top bloke.

If the phone's still in warranty it's best to go to Apple. That way you're still covered if it develops a warranty fault later.

Just bear in mind that you can’t buy genuine Apple screens (neither can any of the shops offering iPhone repairs). The Genius Bar is the only way to get a proper job done.

After about 3/4 months of a model being out a lot of the screens are refurbished genuine LCDs and digitisers with replacement non Apple glass. When the 6s came out there was a massive shortage of displays as Apple had every factory in China churning out OEM displays, so replacements for every phone went through the roof. A 5c doubled in price for example I used to do £35 fitted, and suddenly a screen was costing me £40, and broken displays went back to China at a tenner a pop.

There's a shop in Meadowhall shopping centre now called smash or something like that , will do it whilst you wait.

if it's not in warranty do it yourself, very straight forward and surprisingly easy compared to other phones...won't be a genuine apple screen but will be muchos cheaper

I got a screen for my wife's Iphone 5 of ebay for £13.Its a bit fiddly to fit but if you take your time most people should be able to manage the job. Mrstaxi's phone works as good as new and I got loads of brownie points. 😀

Did Mrs ws' five s in about 15 mins a couple of weeks ago. Not a job for builders fingers or 40 ish year old eyes. It wasn't a genuine apple screen and yes you can tell. However it works for now.

timely

son smashed his 6, looked at the videos I'm not sure I'd cope with these fingers

Just scared I'd cock it up, seen the local Timpson were offering free glass replacement within 12 months. Anyone used them?

Thanks fellas, it's a 5S, well out of warranty and planning to give it to my son as his first phone for his xmas present (my wife now has a new 7) so want it spot on, I'm worried I might eff it up!

I know I should have a go myself but will check out the place in Headingley, or will also email wysiwyg.

I know of several folk who've had shop done replacements and aren't happy with them. Make sure you keep your receipt. The one I bought from eBay came with tools etc for about 15 quid. It really isn't that hard to do apart from the last ribbon connection which nearly resulted in it visiting mr hammer several times.

You can either pay lots of money to Apple and get a proper job done or risk it with a local shop and prepared to be either dissapointed or ripped off with dodgy work. Don't trust Google reviews on shops as most are fake (either the shop posting good re iews or competitors posting bad) get a recommendation from friends. Warranties from local shops are flakey regardless of your possession of a receipt.

The place in Headingley is fine on warranty, we noticed a dead pixel (or similar, like a tiny red spot on the screen) after a month or so, took it in and he replaced it Straight away, no problem at all.

Apple would charge £135 for a genuine replacement if you really want peace of mind, but I reckon Headingley shop will be a bit less than half the price. And we had no issues with them at all (3 replacement screens total, iPhone 5s, 6s and 7+)
