I know some folk find them unnessecary but I liked mind.
Got out my trusty leatherman blast bought by my buddies and engraved for my 18th birthday
Its not the lightest thing in the world but it's been around the block with me on all my adventures ....round NZ , Australia , across Canada and all over europe on a bike. Its been well traveled in the oilfield with work when I was working in the international field. Saved my day more than once and survived to cut up my steak off the BBQ at night.
Took it out to remove the PCB from the boiler today and it just fell apart in my hands. The hinge and the pivot on the lock have fatigued and subsequently the lock and the bits on that side now require a bag to contain all the bits.
Now I ponder what to replace it with as blast looks to be discontinued.
Rebar looks to be a direct replacement -the sidekick looks like a more compact version with predominantly the same usefulness. Does the smaller size hinder it ? -leverage. The free also piques my interest.
The signal and the wave look a bit "lets off road* *batcave utility belt* for my liking.
I replaced a leatherman wave with a gerber suspension. Maybe worth a look?
Would leatherman not repair it for you?
I bought a Victorinox Swiss Spirit tool XC about 9 months ago.
At the time I thought it was a bit of an extravagant purchase. Can’t believe how much I use it.
Certainly a very well built EDC tool, will definitely outlast me, and one of the few tools that will be passed down to my children,
I've had a Rebar for last six years and it is going strong. Nice compact tool.
I think you're right in that it looks like the Rebar is the 'replacement' for the Blast.
Only thing missing is that the Rebar doesn't have scissors and I think the Blast does.
I replaced my Gerber Suspension with a Leatherman Sidekick.
The Gerber seems better value (and their warrantee is excellent - 30 years I think) but it pretty bulky in its folded form. Fine in a bag but not very comfortable in a pocket. The Sidekick has a very slim profile when folded up but is still a good shape in the hand when being used.
Both have sprung pliers which makes them nice to use but I use the sidekick more often than I did the gerber simply because its less of a fuss to carry and therefore more often to hand
The reason though to buy the Sidekick (even though Gerber had sent me a brand new Suspension after I enquired about buying a replacement screwdriver blade for it) was he saw on the Sidekick works on green wood where as the one on the suspension clogs up.
Did you try Whitby and company in Kendal they do warranties on them think it is 25 years or something. I got a 12 year old one replaced with a wave+ last year.
Lifetime warranty! Send it back and they’ll fix it or more likely send you a new one.
As mentioned above - contact Leatherman or their UK representatives about a warranty repair or replacement. Wouldn’t hurt to give a bit of its background history, makes for good promotional material!
Yeah I'd read about that.
I contacted them previously as the flat blade driver broke before- about 10 years ago in the Alps.
They could only replace it for me not repair.
The blast being discontinued a replacement now won't be the same tool.
So I'm looking at what I can get in its place ....even if I have to pay a bit extra.
Have you considered a Charge tti plus?
S30V Stainless blade and replaceable wire cutter blades. Oh and it's titanium.
I've got one with extra bit kits and bit extender.
Also got a Skeletool CX which I carry more often to have Burke opener, most often used screwdriver bits pliers and a blade on me. I've got a Style CS on my keyring mostly for bottle opener and scissors
I’ve got a charge tti - immeasurably better than my Gerber suspension in every single way. The gerber screw drivers are virtually unusable. Utter shite except the pliers. If it wasn’t for the fact work provided it to me I’d sell it.
Charge tti is an awesome tool. Mine was a warranty replacement for an original charge ti that had done years of use but failed eventually.
The newer version is far better, a lot lighter too.
