At the moment I'm simply going to remove as much surface rust as I can with a wire wheel/brush etc then thoroughly wash/degrease and spray with either B & Q barbecue paint, hammerite high temp or PJ1 . Not sure whether I should bother to treat any heavily rusted areas with rust convertor 1st or whether this would be a waste of time?
any comments /advice would be great
thanks in advance
Bill

I used standard blackboard paint on my 400/four's exhaust. I don't own it any more, but the exhaust was still black when I saw it last

I just use exhaust paint, came in a spray can from a motorbike shop, something like hammerite krust on first, wire brush that off and paint it imediately.

Rust convertor et-al on an exhaust would IMO be pointless. If I were doing this job & have on many occasions, I would buy something like the PJ1 or Sperex VHT & follow the instructions on the can. IE remove all the rust you can, degrease & remove any dust created by the wire brush with brake & clutch cleaner & then spray with the recommended number of coats. I find having the metal at room temp when applying the paint helps it to adhere & allows the solvent to flash off quickly. Once thouroughly dry refit to the bike & start the engine allowing the paint to bake fully before exposing it to road dirt. 🙂
