So my 16mth old iPhone 6s battery appears to be fubarred, only holding charge for 4/5hrs and that tell-tale sudden collapse in charge levels from 20% down to 4% over approximately 5minutes.
I'm genuinely not interested in a new phone* so was thinking of booking myself in to an Apple Store for a new battery installation - any experiences?
* my 6s has spent its entire life in a "life proof" case so is immaculate
Drop in to one of those phone repair places that are in every high street, ask them to pop you in a new battery. it'll take 'em 5 minutes and they'll charge you 20-30 quid.
Take it into Apple and you'll get bent over for the same job for 60 quid minimum. Thats how much they charge just to look at it

Take it into one of those mobile phone repair places and you'll get bent over for fitting inferior and possibly dangerous non-warrantied parts.
Is 16 months acceptable? I'd say not.
Shirley that is a warranty job?
It could be a software issue, where the signal from the battery isn't being processed properly, and so the phone thinks it's got less power than it has and shuts down, there is a fix, but I forget what. Take it to the Apple Store...
Take it to an Apple Store.
Having seen one iPhone catch fire and another bulging like something out of alien, after having non-genuine high street battery replacement, I wouldn't trust a non-genuine battery in something that I keep in my pocket near my balls...
Take it to Apple, be pleasant and nice to the staff, and chances are you'll get a replacement for free.

Genius Bar is free. Always worth trying there before shelling out for something, especially if it is still in warranty or SOGA.
I've replaced batteries in a couple of earlier iPhones myself. It was fiddly but not too hard. I don't know how easy the 6S is to work on though.
Thanks all. Will get something booked in with the Apple folk.
...and don't call me Shirley

This.
iPhone warranty is one year, but goods are still covered by the Consumer Rights Act. I'd argue that a battery failing whilst you're still paying for the thing would fall foul of not being "Satisfactory Quality." But I'd have this line of attack as a backup if Apple don't play ball, you're far more likely to get results from Apple by being nice at them, I'm certain they apply an Attitude Tax.

^ that's not at all uncommon with the genuine ones either, replaced my own battery on a 4S after it started doing that, took about 15 mins, would probably take less if it wasn't the first time I'd had one apart.
Personally I'd try and get that done under warranty on a 16 month old phone.
Agree with those suggesting AppleStore as a first line of action. There is a battery test that allows out-of-warranty replacements - had one done on a daughter's 4S a while back.
Note that a non-Apple battery may make other repairs/investigations by Apple harder - according to repair rules so perhaps keep it to switch back in if necessary.
Two year warranty on electricals anyway, no?
Book a Genius Bar, be nice and polite, say your really sorry to bother them with it, ask them to have a look and run the diagnostics on it.....chances are if they can't fix it with a software update/reset, you walk out with a new one.
Back it up to your computer first......don't bother with the cloud back up, as no one in the world understands how the cloud works!
Surely being 16 months old makes it vintage and they won't stock batteries for it anyway.

Sorry to ruin your conspiracy theory, but they still sell the 6s. So battery supply is not an issue.
Battery is considered wear and tear I think as it’s only warrantied to last a certain number of charging cycles.
I’ve never replaced a battery in a 6S, but I have for every model from the 3GS to the 6. The 6 was the toughest as it’s firmly glued in, so you need to heat the case to melt the glue. While you’re taking the battery out, don’t use metal implements and pierce the battery. An acquaintance did that and set fire to their iPhone and left a nice mark on their kitchen worktop.
Bearing all that in mind, leave it to the professionals if you’re at all unsure. I’d personally never use one of the pop up repair places because they’re basically hamfisted amateurs like I am but more expensive.
Take it to the Apple shop, be polite, smile, maybe drop in the odd compliment and they'll like look after you. They've always helped me out in the past.

You mean guarantee, not warranty. The warranty from Apple is 12 months.
And yes, theoretically at least. The EU ruling is untested in UK courts AFAIK, and in any case the CRA gives you more rights. It can be up to six years.
Here, everything you ever wanted to know about Apple's warranty and its legal obligations but were afraid to ask:
https://www.apple.com/uk/legal/statutory-warranty/
It's a known issue with the 6s, check the link might be free to change the battery:

Batteries are generally considered consumable items. But I'd argue that if it's consumable it should be possible to replace it, and if it'd not possible to replace it then it's not a bloody consumable. I don't have to send my printer back to HP every time it runs out of ink.

Oh, nice find.
And if the OP isn't affected, from the closing statement that they're covering batteries for three years one could infer that Apple expect batteries to last at least three years.

That's exactly why you take it to the Apple Store.
Because they run diagnostics, and if it's inside it's expected lifespan, they will give you a new phone.
They will maybe give you a new phone if it's outside it's expected lifespan, if you pass the attitude test 😉
Takes about ten minutes and it's free.
Genius Bar appointment made. Will see what they suggest. Thanks all.
Try rolling up the bottoms of your jeans before entering.
That seemed to be the look at the Brum store when I took the lad in.
They were very nice as shop staff go though.
I wanted to hang longer but ran out of skinny latte.

If you live near one of course...
I live in Southampton & still couldn't face going to West Quay. And my 6 is ~2.5 years old. Oh, and the lightening port was knackered too.
I went to a non official repair place (which does have a good rep) and they put in a Duracell battery & replaced the lightening port for about as much as I could by the parts for (£60 odd). And then screwed it back together properly so the screen wasn't falling out.
When I spoke to Apple, they said the battery was perfectly 'in tolerance' and was in great condition, with no software issues. I could kill in in an hours use, or leaving it in battery save mode it would die in approx 4 hours. (wither everything turned off & every battery saving trick up and running.
Now it lasts like a normal phone again 🙂

To which the question is what is the tolerance, what is the spec of that and the parameters that you measure it by? What % of original spec is the lower limit?
Remind me again how much these things cost??

Err yes it is

Dunno, mine was about £200, second hand a couple of years ago. It's not had an easy life & not being the original owner, or having a valid warranty, I didn't want to be 'that' person 🙂
