Looking at hiring a car in Canada next month for 10days for a holiday.
Normally with work I just book direct with Avis as I don't really care how much it costs.
So, are these broker sites any good or should I just go direct?
I got ripped off through rentalcars.com, avoid like the plague
Sounds promising. What did they do?
Used cartrawler though that was through my frequent flyer stuff
I booked ours from Calgary next week via holiday autos we tend to use that for all our trips. We usually get something from a known company via them
Holiday autos aka cartrawler
I've used RentalCars.com a few times, Canada, Europe and the States, never once had an issue and would use again. Always cheaper than going through the main sites, and you can pick and choose which rental company you use.

Pleased to hear that since I've just booked a car through them in Slovenia in September.
It's much more dependent on the actual hire company IME, RentalCars.com etc. are just agents.
I've got separate excess insurance so should be fine whatever happens.
I'm figuring that picking one of the major rental firms, in a major airport, arriving early afternoon should probably avoid most of the issues that the 1 star reviews of holidayautos and rentalcars seem to complain about.
Whenever we use holiday autos we always pick one of the major car companies in their results, usually there's only a few quid difference anyway and this forum alone seems to have masses of car hire woe threads. We also use seperate excess insurance
just booked through holiday autos. 8% topcashback as well.
any recommendations for excess insurance?
Excess insurance depends on your point of view. I've been ripped off by Goldcar when I had my own XS insurance.
Despite me checking over he car carefully they found the tiniest mark and charged me €250. tried to claim it back from AXA and they said fair wear and tear, not covered.
From now on, I pay up at the desk and smile nicely knowing they have not blocked '000s on my credit card.
I used Rentalcars.com for a trip to Poland, I got a much cheaper deal than anything I could find on the main sites. I chose Hertz, and it was almost half the price they were offering. No problems at all with the whole process.
I used rentalcars.com from Toulouse. Cheap and stressfree. Ended up with Inter-rent, a subsidiary of Europcar. All good. (other than having to drive a Punto, but that was entirely my fault for choosing it)
