MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
All my threads (reading and starting) these days seem to be building related....but it's a fount of knowledge on here.
Any roofers recommended or to avoid?
Or even how the hell to choose... had one lot round that seem knowledgeable and have done similar work nearby (saw them working there, hence contacted them), but they're not members of any of the gov schemes, not sure how much all that matters?
Thats because most of these schemes just want to take their money ..and give very little in return
In my experience most tradesmen who sign up to these are utter s**t at their job...and the one's who haven't seem to be much more able
Are they members of the NFRC?
Not a government scheme, but it is a trade body that at least has a code of practice. There is also a warranty provision / complaints procedure should you need them. My Dad was a roofer and this was always what he recommended that you looked for.
Nah. not NFRC either. Which is why I worry a bit about it, but then I've seen a lot of work locally they've done and it all looks ok to me (and similar work to what I need done).

I do wonder about things like that, and how much they're really worth. I.e. complaints procedure, nice to have, but if stuff goes badly wrong isn't it all likely to end up in a court anyhow... damn I'm such a pessimist 🙁
Just ask someone whose had a new roof who they used? Chaps I used for my workshop were working down the street, I just wandered over and talked to them.

This is how I found this lot (also got a quote from someone else recommended but was less impressed with them). Saw them working on a roof nearby and thought "that's exactly the work I want done".
On a related note, re-rendering parapet walls (on a terrace) and replacing some coping stones seems likely - will I need to issue party wall notices to neighbours? Roofer says no, but surely we do?
I've used Craig Herbert Roofing on a couple of my houses and he's always been very reliable. Turns up when he says he will, good price and fantastic work. He's based in Downend and has done work for me in St George and Bishopston.
We used this guy:
Good quality work, but seemed very keen to get his payment quicker than agreed terms.
I had a new roof put on my house, which involved taking the slates off, cutting the old roof off ( interesting to see as the elm timber had twisted and deflected by upto 12 inches in places so it was sprung loaded), replacing the wall plates and new roof built from a pile of timber and slates put back on (plus some new ones).
Person who did it was Darren Thomas and Sons (I think, I just called him Darren tbh) on 07711489112 from Weston who was brilliant, turned up when he said he would and took pride in what he did; and one of the few people I would recommend (darcy from here is another person who I wouldn't hesistate to recommend)
If you want photos of what he did on mine I can take them if it helps.
If you need a sparky I know someone who is really good, and doesn't want mental money for doing a good job; and if you want a floor put down contact Darcy 🙂
If you need roof repairs and other general building jobs I know a great chap who lives close to me (Gloucester road). We've used him several times and know him well now, he is an honest chap and has popped round just to give advice on a few occasions. He's done work for friends too. Can pass on his number if you're interested.

I do need a sparky, for some work done (rewire!) before we move in, got some quotes already but more recommendations always good!
Cheers for the other recommendations. Cant' find any of them in the various schemes either, so maybe that's less of an issue than other trades which are more heavily regulated etc.
