We will be in touch
I received a letter from my council last night that I am to be removed from the Electoral Register as apparently I am not resident at my property!? No warning, no letter to query who is here, just struck off with immediate effect!
The letter says I have 14 days to appeal in writing (which I will, recorded delivery as proof) and that a hearing will be scheduled. This will mean that their deadline for registering to vote in the upcoming General Election will have passed.
I've lived at my current place (rented) for 20 months, have paid my Council Tax (with the correct name and address on it) the whole time and definitely informed them of my move as I have already voted in a local election in that time. I definitely want to vote (no vote, no say etc) and have voted in every election I have been able to since I turned 18, to have some no-name take that away from me has really got me wound up!
Anyone had this happen to them? What things do they look at? I have bank statements, electric bills and wage slips with my address on them. Is that enough?
Democracy is alive and well! Look at it this way, at least you're not living in Florida, who, let's face it, don't have the best rep for allowing people to vote 😕
But at least their approach ensured another term for GW...
The Queen has a horse running at the Cheltenham festival in a couple of weeks, maybe throw yourself under it?
That'll learn 'em for sure.
Do you also live somewhere else?
Are you who you say you are ?
Ironic, given my council still have the ex owner (over 1 year ago) registered to vote at ours, despite me previously telling them she was no longer resident there.
Silly question .....
BUT
You did return the voter registration form didn't you ?
and sent it back or did it online ?
If not that is the reason
Yes
Did you previously vote for the opposite party to that which runs your council? They know you know 😯

You can have one of my votes if you like. I have two.
Refused the Right to Vote.
I've reluctantly surrendered my ability to vote (moved house and haven't registered), so that they do not find me. Bummer!
Wow, according to that I have 0.2 of a vote, so apparently needn't bother making the journey.
I will though.
The average UK voter has 4x more voting power than voters in Bristol South.
😯
Not entirely sure I believe that website at the moment - do we really think Nick Clegg has a safe seat?
Respect Mah Authoritah!
I have 2.5x the average power.
stealthcat - Memberdo we really think Nick Clegg has a safe seat?
yes.
on the whole, the people of sheffield hallam are quite comfortable thankyou. And it's either him or a tory.
0.1 of a vote here - I'll still vote though just in case everyone thinks the same and I end with UKIP!
Back to the OP - contact your local MP and kick up a stink - that should either speed up the appeal process or at least get you an explanation of the council reasoning.
0.06 of a vote here 🙂
0.031 - so basically, until/unless we get PR voting I might as well not bother
ahwiles - the risk for Clegg is that the students organize themselves to vote en masse for someone else. There's also a lot of other people who are unhappy that they voted Clegg and got Cameron. They wouldn't all have put Tory as their second choice. I think he'll survive but 7th May will be squeaky bum time for him and he won't have the majority he did in the past.
Florida, who, let's face it, don't have the best rep for allowing people to vote
You can vote, they just might choose to count something different instead!
Just moved house from 0.517 of a vote to 0.268.
That wasn't mentioned in the brochure! Pfff...
I have a sixth of a vote, but my parents 10 miles away have just over one each!
My wife isn't allowed to vote. She's lived here since 1998, pays a lot of tax (main household salary earner at the moment) but hey if you ain't a brit you don't get a say.
However as she apparently has 0.057 of a vote I'm not sure we should be losing sleep over it!
0.008 here. It's no wonder I barely give a toss...
Had the same letter a few weeks ago, rang them up and it appears if your name isnt exactly the same as on the tax ofixc .hm governmnet site etc data base then you are a reject, and you need to prove who you are eg passport, driving licence, utility bill etc.
I just pointed out that i had dropped an initial off the form, and all was ok got a thankyou and sorry letter a few days latter.
Oh and you did put your bank details on the original form and details of how much you wanted to donate to the jobs for the boys /girls party, didnt you
0.073% ...my voter apathy just increased
And it's either him or a tory.
It's amazing to think there are still people left who believe that there is any significant differences between the Tories and the LibDems.
And not just that but that these imagined differences are so great that they could happily vote for one but definitely not for the other. Bizarre.
.
When a completely unelected wealthy Tory banker (who was given a peerage to get round the problem of finding people prepared to vote for him) was made a minister, this was said of him :
"In Stephen we will be appointing a Minister with a long career as a leading international banker, one of the few to emerge with credit from the recent financial crisis, and somebody who has set out a powerful philosophy for ethical business".
Who was it who poured such lavish praise over a wealthy Tory banker......a fellow Tory no doubt - who else could have such warm feelings for a committed Tory politician? Well no, it was a very senior Liberal Democrat politician in fact.
And who is this wealthy Tory banker with "a powerful philosophy for ethical business" and who was "one of the few to emerge with credit from the recent financial crisis" that Vince Cable was fawning over ?
It was actually Stephen Green who had just presided as Chairman of HSBC while the bank was engaged in money laundering and helping wealthy tax-dodgers in their illegal activities.
Different names maybe, but fundamentally the same thing.
.
OP - is you black ?
I was having trouble logging in and posting on my phone so I'll expand on this:
You did return the voter registration form didn't you ?and sent it back or did it online ?
If not that is the reason
Yes, I did the registration online last month. I have already voted at this address too. The major worry I've got is that I have an SIA license and one of the stipulations is that you are on the Electoral Role to keep it. It will also impact my credit rating too.
So, back to the original Q: Has anybody been in a similar situation?

Did you not read project's post above?
...I think he'll survive but 7th May will be squeaky bum time for him (Clegg)...
I imagine that Cleggy would be more than a little relieved if he lost his seat, I don't think he's found the last 4.75 years quite as much fun as hoped...
(If you were Clegg, would you want another 5 years?)
He didn't jump into the bed with the Tories because they forced him or spiked his drinks with Rohypnol.
It was consensual and he was completely willing.
The only thing that's wiped the smile off Nick Clegg's face is the day after an election when voters have had the opportunity to express their opinion of his party. EG, Rochester By-election 3 months ago the Liberal Democrat vote stood at 0.9%, the lowest vote for a UK government party in recorded history.
Apart from the electorate pissing him off I don't doubt that he's loved every minute of it.
Did you not read project's post above?
Oops, no. Got a little bit over-excited that I'd managed to log in without a stupid advert crashing my browser 😳
My name does appear exactly the same though on everything I have, maybe there's been a typing error somewhere. My surname is a common first name so it has happened before. Something to look into.
