My father in law wants one first his birthday.

Anyone know anything about them?

Revox are the best in portable recorders. Why does he want one?

Standard issue at the BBC was the portable Uher. Mono only, if I remember correctly. We used Revox in the studio - huge things about the size of a dalek. They must have gone somewhere to die.

I think Ferrograph made some decent stuff, in South Shields of all places (Barbour still do AFAIK) Dunno if there's any Ferrograph stuff around now though.

In a former life I trained as an audio video engineer and did a couple of 3 month stints at the bbc and was very familiar with those small portable Uher machines. I regret to say that in the 80's I filled a skip with used but perfectly useable machines when it was time to replace them. madness looking back at the waste.

Maybe he likes to move it, move it.

Uhers were certainly portable - used for vox-pops and pretty much anthing outside of the studio. Perhaps guide your FIL to the minidisc thread.

Just as an aside, a reel to reel recorder caused my first real bike crash. I found an old one in the bin whilst doing my morning paper round.

It fitted almost perfectly into my paper bag and I set off down Kingsgate (****in big urban hill in Aberdeen) towards home.

The whole shebang swung round just as I reached full velocity on my Claude Butler 10 speed and knocked my elbow, causing me to swing into the parked cars on my left.

Had to pretend to be dead for the first five minutes after the car owner came running out his house. He was mightily peeved.

You've got that right!
As featured in Diva, one of my favourite films.

Standard theatre playback for audio was revox until late 1990s. Even though we were editing it all in pro tools. Minidisc lasted a few years now we just do it direct out the pc\mac. That's my boring revox story. The end.

Lusted after a revox b77. Played around with a uher. Happy days splicing tape. Back in the days when friends editing magazines cut and past stuff using scissors and glue... Only a generation ago...
