Morning everyone,
Does anyone have any tips regarding recording audio using the line in on an iPhone? Either hardware solutions and/or app based.
What I'm trying to do is record short videos of electronic music production. I'm having trouble getting consistent optimal levels due to having so little control with what I'm using. Currently I'm using an old iPhone SE with a line in from an audio mixer going into a little adapter like the picture going in to the iPhone headphone jack.
The problem is there's no way that I'm aware of to monitor the incoming until you've made the video, so it's generally too quiet or distorted. The sweet spot is quite narrow. What I've been doing is using the Voice memos app to look at the waveform before recording but it's not a great solution. I'm wondering whether something like an iRig together with an app would be a better solution. Any users?
I'm not interested in recording the audio separately and then syncing them up as that kind of kills the spontaneity I'm looking for, and I'm trying to avoid faff with computers if possible. I want to get it all in one go. I've had some cracking results just using the iphone's built in microphone but it's not consistent and has been pure luck on placement, levels in the room etc.
Any ideas?

However, on the odd occasion where i've lucked out and got the levels right it sounds great so must be possible. I just want to have the phone set up on a tripod to record video/audio on demand with minimal dicking around which kills the creative flow. A simple LED that signifies overload would work as I can then push the output from the mixer until the LED cones on then back off a bit. Wondering whether an iRig would do this?

I've seen DJ's videoing their sets on Youtube/Instagram using iPhones so it must be possible. I've sent messages/left comments... no reply as yet. Just can't work out how they're getting their levels right. They can't be recording a two-hour DJ mix only to check it later and it's too hot and have to start again...
Plenty of audio interface options. I don't know enough about them to be able to recommend any, but a quick google search thrown up plenty.
