Any recommendations for where to get some decent rechargeable batteries online? Normal AAs, AAAs etc. Need to stock up for Xmas as has to be cheaper in the long run than the mountain of batteries kids toys seem to get through!
I usually end up buying 7dayshop good to go batteries.

not the best out there, but I reckon the best value for money. The top notch eneloops and the like are just too pricey IMO. The super bundle of 24 batteries for c.£1 a battery would do you well for xmas.
Sanyo Eneloops are the best rechargeable batteries you can get. Not the cheapest though.
These guys came out well in some usage reviews and I've not had any problems with them and been using them for 4+ years now:
Buy direct or from their Ebay shop.
Cheers chaps, much appreciated.
Just to agree with the above, I use Vapextech where performance is important, 7DS for anything else.
I use Ansmann rechargeables. They seem very decent, good capacity and supposedly very good longevity.
the advantage with envelops is that they don't self discharge if left for periods unused like the Instants (vapextech) do. Use to do a lot of competition RC plane flying and we mostly used Eneloops.

Make sure you get the ones that don't self-discharge. Duracell do some. It's really really useful since you can charge them and leave them charged and they won't go flat on their own.
They are available from normal shops too, in a sort of greeny colour. They are advertised as being sold 'ready charged' which of course they can only do because they don't self discharge.
the 7DS "Good to Go" batteries that aracer and I mentioned are their own brand version of the non-self discharge branded products.

I don't know if that's 100% true. What I DO know is that there are very few batteries manufacturers in the world, with most batteries being re-branded. Sanyo ARE a manufacturer. I've used Eneloops since they came out in both AA and AAA and, coupled with a decent charger (in our case a La Crosse BL-700) and couldn't be any happier. OK, that's a lie, I could be happier, but there are no Swedish triplets that live locally.

In fact I'm using the standard ones. Personally I don't see the big advantage of the eneloop type ones - if you check the specs you'll find that you have to leave a standard high capacity cell to self-discharge for several weeks before it has less capacity than an eneloop. Personally I don't have a big problem with recharging batteries just before I use them. It does of course depend what you're using batteries for, but there's clearly less of a benefit to using them in applications where self-discharge is a big issue, as you'll get far less cycles out of them before they die of old-age.
I'm particularly surprised at the suggestion of using them in RC planes, where you don't even give them an hour to self-discharge, though personally I'm using LiIon for that anyway.
