To watch with the missus through the cold winter months
We have seen all the 24s, not interested in Lost or Prison Break, we have just finished Doc Martin, I was thinking of getting Vincent but that has just started showing on ITV3 so I can watch that for free instead now.
Someone has recommended The Wire, is that anygood, or are there others I should be spending my hard earned cash on?
Sopranos?
if you haven't seen the wire, get the wire -
you can get all 5 series for 70 quid in HMV I noticed the other day
Spaced series 1+2+bonus (series 1 the best, fairly cheap too)
Firefly, if you like sci-fi

The Father Ted boxset gave us lots of happy hours.
Generation Kill. Gritty, funny and well done.
For something a little lighter... Black Books (if you can find it).
I've got spaced, black books etc, I like comedy shows but the missus is more into drama type things if you know what I mean,
If it were up to me we would be watching blackadder on a continuous loop but she wouldn't have it
The Wire is absolutely brilliant, the best box set I've watched yet.
It'll take a few episodes to really get into it, but stick with it!
Peep Show.
Dexter is great, Sopranos was brilliant. Band of Brothers.
I am going to invest in the Wire or the Shield.
twin peaks. Over 24hrs of slightly (okay, very by the 2nd series) twisted Lynch joy: )
Wire
Sopranos
Dexter
Battlestar Galactica
Deadwood. Based on actual events and real hiostorical characters out in the old west in 1876.
Featuring Wild Bill Hickock, "Calamity" Jane Cannary and other less famous characters.
Iain McShane's defining career role as the magnificent saloon-owner and central crime lord "Al Swearengen". It's a big set of 36 episodes which I have still not tired of watching.
If and when the Beeb release them, you might try their latest adaptation of Jane Austin's "Emma" if you're looking for a more romantic entertainment for the better half. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I think that it's far superior to the film version that had Gwyneth Paltrow in the lead...
I can't believe no-one's mentioned The Shield...

West wing. Utterly superb. Or House.
Cheers for your help guys, the wire it is for the time being.
Is twin peaks really old? I have vague memories of watching that baout 10 years ago I think, but my memory of that time is a bit "hazy" to say the least
Thread saved to favourites to remind me to buy deadwood once the wire is finished and then plough through the rest of the recommendations
the wire
battlestar galactica
generation kill
sopranos
deadwood- massively underrated
firefly followed by serenity
supernatural bit silly but fun
carnivale
I have the complete West Wing box set. There's about 150 episodes, so it should see you through winter...
The Wire is also great. I'm just starting series 4.
+5 for the Sopranos
Sharpe.
Dexter.
Tankslapper you swine, I was going to post that - Tesco Direct have the full box set including Best ofs and the Movie down to £34...which I reckon is a real bargain for about 12 DVDs...
Saw a Ronnie Barker box set in HMV the other day - includes stuff like Porridge, Open All Hours, Clarence etc etc
What about a blast from the past:
Shogun or V
Another vote for Battlestar Galactica.
And another one for Firefly
Wire
Mighty Boosh
Cracker
Prime Suspect
Deadwood
Band of Brothers
another vote for the westwing & peepshow.
Scrubs is the only TV series boxset I've bought. Family Guy would be high on my list though...
Just started watching The Lakes a couple of days ago. Only ever watched a few minutes here and there when it was originally aired in the late 90's. Ah, those were the days ...
Definitely Peep Show
Band of Brothers
Fawlty Towers
I have peep show up to series 4 on DVD and the new ones are still being shown
Fawly Towers I have on VHS but no way to play them.
Family guy I have a few series of, but American Dad could be an idea.
While I was off on paternity leave I fell in love with scrubs and my name is earl.
My GF's Grandad IS "not literally" Captain Mainwaring which just adds to the humour
Our Friends in the North
Sopranos
Boston Legal
The interesting thing about band of brothers is that it is not fiction. The interviews with the actual soldiers brings a tear to your eye. Great viewing.
if you haven't seen any of the following then they are essential, as the best tv shows ever made:
The Wire
The Sopranos
Band of Brothers
West Wing
Any of the above will do the job.
Peep Show
Band of Brothers
Yup.
Band of Brothers
The Wire
Father Ted
You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll say "mutha****a" a lot.
Not necessarily in that order.
city of men
Noggin The Nog
I'm about to drop £40 on The Shield boxset - seems good vfm for 88 episodes.
Fawlty Towers - my favoritest favoritest comedy EVER. Wy wife hates it but I can't wait to get the kids into it when she's out
six feet under
The West Wing
Band of Brothers
Battlestar Galactica
Red Dwarf
Enterprise
The World At War (£25 on love film) ((maybe just you though))
Firefly
MASH - something like a 10yr series run..Should keep you off the streets.
House, Battlestar Galactica (it's scifi but don't be scared), the West Wing, Band of Brothers and of course the Wire, all brilliant.
