I have loved Bodies, 6 Feet Under, The Wire and True Blood; liked Sopranos, Between the Lines, not cared for Dexter or Mad Men.

Twin Peaks is on order (did see it in the 80s) any suggestions for cheap nights in?

Breaking Bad is very good. If you liked the Wire, the show that Mr Simon worked on before that, Homicide: Like On The Street is very good. Damages gets an honorary mention, but goes off the rails towards season 4 I thought.

Also, if you're not adverse to subtitles, may I recommend Spiral and The Killing.

West Wing? House maybe. And Homicide. Oz, if you like it incredibly grim- first couple of series are superb.

Band of Brothers if you fancy some straight-up serious drama.

It's old and very corny, but I watched the Man About The House boxset recently, and it was brilliant.

+1 for Breaking Bad. Best thing I've seen in ages.

(and the celing collapsing scene made my gf physically sick - you'll probably know by that point if it's for you!)

But yes , 24 is very good (apart from a very shaky series 4 IIRC)

Best box set I ever got was Father Ted.

Laughs per pound it was the best value ever.

The IT Crowd is good too.

Moving into comedy, Arrested Development is freaking awesome.

Along with the Shield, I recommend Battlestar Gallactica. Don't be put off by memories of the original, it's so much more than just a scifi series. My wife and I went through about a month of mourning when we finished the 100 episode box set.

I really enjoyed Lost, but I know it's not everyone's cup of tea.

Second The Killing (Danish Version).

Thought Spiral was over acted.

+1 for Breaking Bad - it keeps getting worse but you keep watching, like a train crash.

Also, if you like Simon/Burns (The Wire) go for The Corner and Generation Kill. Homicide Life on the Street was ace too but the boxset will take most of the rest of your life to watch.

Deadwood - kinda like the Wire but with Cowboy hats.

If you want something a bit off-the-wall - John from Cincinnati. (I never had a clue what was going on but loved every minute.)
