Looking for some hand luggage for some trips this year.
Usual hand luggage size, not flying with RyanAir.
Thinking EastPak Tranverz but open to ideas.
Briggs and Riley expandable, excellent cases.
I have a patagucci mini-mlc. It’s great.
I’d got with a convertible backpack rather than wheeled. Easier to carry around at the other end?

I borrowed one of these last year for a week long trip. I was suitably impressed.
Don’t, whatever you do, go with Musto.
I saw one I really liked, looked really heavy duty, had wheels and a harness so best of both worlds.
First time I used it, the compression straps pulled out of the seam. Contacted Musto, the second one did exactly the same. Gave up at that point.
Patagonia mini mlc 26L (if you can find one). Because when you do eventually fly with “lying air”, the bag will go under the seat without charge. Son1 has one and it’s flexible. I’d get a week of kit in it if I wore my big shoes. It’s also passed their check in test. And where they’ve gone now, others will follow when it comes to price gouging.

Travelpro is excellent, lots of crew use it. My two pieces are probably 20 yrs old and still going strong despite significant mileage
We've got a really great pair of osprey bags that include rucksack straps and sized for hand luggage.
Used them as our only luggage for 3 weeks in Uzbekistan.

the new 30l is apparently the same bag, but they remeasured it. It’s been fine on BA, easyJet and Loganair so far.
Had a Tranverz for years, very good kit.
I've a easpak safepak for tight airlines and an osprey farpoint 40 for when I have a full size bag. Tbh the smaller one is much nicer to wander round an airport with if you've got hold luggage free (and I often have a bike with me so no skipping the pick up lines), big is best when Im paying my own way 🙂

this. Easyjet have had tightened right up recently, understandable as the cabins were starting to resemble a bus in Central America
I flew with Ryan air this week. As a skinflint I went for the free baggage and ended up using a lowpro camera bag with all the compression straps pulled tight.
Have a BA sized hand luggage suitcase- too big!
Small rucksack- too big!
Courier bag- too big!
Laptop bag- too big!
All of the above have been hand baggage at some point. £110 for the flight. £40 for 10kg hand baggage.<!--more-->
the last easyjet flight I did, there was someone stood by the boarding gate with the bag sizer and a card machine. professional mugging.

I booked a flight with Ryanair last night, it’s clearly explained during booking what luggage is allowed and the costs. Even with additional costs it was still reasonable and better value than the alternative carriers. Don’t really get people being pissy over luggage with budget carriers, it’s all explained before you book either pay or don’t take extra bags.
We have 4 CabinZero bags of various flavours we just used for a week in the USA flying with Virgin who aren't the most generous in terms of cabin baggage by any means.
They have a good guide on their site about which bags fit within each airlines rules, which is quite conservative.
If you want to maximise space for stuff, all you really want is a big canvas sack with the means to carry it reasonably comfortably.

surely with the soft bags its just a case of punching and stuffing it into the little cage, as long as you havent over filled it.
although I understand the frustration. I have a nice wheelie suitcase that was sold (years ago) as hand luggage compliant .more fool me for not actually checking. its unneccesarily small for BA, and too big for the budget airlines.
I just bought a Cabin Max bag from Amazon for about 30 quid - specifically wanted 40x30x20 for travel on Transavia. I haven't used it yet but it looks OK and it actually is the specified size. I wanted one without too much padding - waste of space to pad my dirty undies, and if I'm carrying something delicate I'll pad it myself.

We've a couple of Cabin Max convertible rucksacks - has wheels. Easy Jet proof in size. Enough space for 5 nights !

cabin max stuff is cheap and the right size, but tends (i've had a few) not to be the best made stuff. if you're getting one get it a couple of days before you leave to make it easier to return if the stitching comes undone when you get back (I've never had any trouble returning their stuff)

Or simply enforcing the terms and conditions which are made clear at the time of booking? 🤷♂️
If one is going to take the p. by trying to take an enormo-bag into the cabin, expect the airline to do the same.
