my Suunto advizor has packed in and I would need a replacement. Don't want to spend a fortune and the only "must have" feature (apart from the time!) is an altimeter

I like the look of the Suunto Observer titanium - any thoughts or alternatives?

thanks

I was going to suggest one of these: http://www.watch-space.co.uk/casio-watches-g-shock-gw-3000m-4aer.html
but then I noticed the Altimiter requirement. Pity, that's a nice watch for a G-Shock, aimed at pilots, ironically.

Won't the pilots have an external reference as in blue good, green or building colour less good.

Altimeters on wris****ches work by measuring barometric pressure and unless constantly calibrated (which kind of defeats the object) are not very reliable. There are much better ways of measuring altitude nowadays (smart phone, gps unit etc)

I use a Suunto Vector in Black/Orange for every day use. I guess you can get something cheaper but I'm happy with it.

No need to compare swiss army knives, if you havn't got the "swiss champ" then you are not in the club.

[actually it is possible to use one as a club. An I don't have one at the moment, but my son loves his swiss champ].

I don't generally like G-Shock watched, but this one I really like, and it has the solar power and radio control setting too. Best looking G-Shock on the market, and if I had the money I'd snap one up. A new computer comes first, though.

Complete bunkum. Baro altimeters on wris****ches work just fine, and will stay in calibration until a weather front comes through, giving you accurate height to within a few metres. Dead easy to recalibrate when you're at the top of a hill or some other point of known height. Meanwhile GPS altitude is rubbish - can easily vary by 30m or more, and completely rubbish at measuring ascent and descent as the variation is so much.
