Recommend me a sim card

I am wanting to get a sim card for my daughter's spare phone (a tatty old thing used in emergencies and usually sat at the bottom of her bag of horse riding gubbins).

I just want something that I can buy and top up when required without the need for a monthly subscription but also not have credit expire (ie, I'd just get one for £x and the credit would sit there until used up).

I am sure they exist but I can't find any!

I don't think they do exist, I've not seen anything like that in years. Would be handy to have as an emergency back-up.

Smarty's entry-level offering is £6/month with an option of cashback for unused data. I could give you a referral code if such things were allowed on STW, which they aren't.

They all need some activity on them, normally one call or top up every 6 months. We use asda mobile PAYG for similar emergency phone in the car.

Three used to have a good sim for this but it was discontinued a year or two ago, not sure if they replaced it with anything.

Have a look at 1p mobile. I think they have a deal for £30 for one year.

I have a three sim in my daughter's phone. It has 200mb a month "free" as long as you use it every so often. If more data were needed you can top up. Dunno if they still offer these.

Thank you for your replies so far - this explains why I can't find any! That 1p Mobile offer seems the best option so far thank you!

Giff gaff doesn't need monthly subscription but you need to make a call every now and then (three months I think) so should only cost you about a pound a year to keep the line open. You top up online from a card.
If you know someone on Giffgaff they can order a sim to be posted to you free of charge.
Edit: just checked and it is one paying call every 6 months so 50p per year minimum spend, or £10 top up could last 20 years!

I use a GiffGaff sim in an old Nokia for roughly the same reason ( not horses, it’s my bike mobile) I think I have used about £2 over the past three years. They even send you an email to remind you to use it after about five months IIRC

I can’t see that offer on GiffGaff? We are all on GG so I’d be happy to keep it with them…

If you login to your Giffgaff account and choose 'my giffgaff' from the menu there is an option to 'share the love'.
Open that page (ignoring the corporate naff niceness) and there is an option to order more sims.
When it arrives put it in you new / old phone and top it up by the minimum amount. It will then work as pay as you go. I think the rate is 25p per minute now which is quite steep but if only for emergencies then one every 6 months or occasional calls of the 'help but ring me back first' type should be fairly cheap to run.

I think you just add credit to their PAYG sim and then make a call or a text to activate. No need to get a goodybag. You then just need to do something with the SIM every 6 months.

Edit. What they said ^
