Hi,

My BT Home Hub 2.0 finally seems to be on its way out so can some of you clued up bods recommend me a replacement.

The router is randomly resetting itself and dropping connections a lot. WiFi sometime struggles to connect at the top of the house also.

I currently have my PC connected via Ethernet cable and everything else connects via WiFi. At anyone time I may be doing a bit of gaming on the PC whilst my son is playing on his tablet and the missus is streaming Netflix onto the laptop. Mobile phones will also be connected doing whatever they do in the background. There is also an xbox to be connected but would probably not be online at the same time as the PC gaming.

I know nothing about networking and seem to be confusing myself even more the more I read.

I am currently on BT Broadband and have no plans to change this in the immediate future. There are no cost limitations but as always the cheaper the better. I don't want to spend £100 if something at £50 will satisfy my needs. I probably wouldn't even be replacing it if it wasn't for the dropped connections.

Cheers for any help.

Rob

Might be worth seeing if you can get Infinity as you'll get a new Home Hub.

Just ordered my Infinity now as it's eventually gone live.

I've replaced my sky router with one of the Asus Dark Knight routers and it's been excellent.

Duel band wifi and gig ethernet ports plus with Merlin firmware on it has lots of nice little features.

@somouk
Why did you change from the standard firmware? Got a link to the Merlin firmware?

The cheapest solution will be to get BT to provide you with a new one for free. Has your original contract period expired ? If so by signing a new contract, eg 12-18 months you'll get a new HomeHub. If you tell BT you are thinking of leaving as the HomeHub is broken this will incentivise them.

The Apple Airport Express / Extreme will do the job for you but never the cheapest options and will make most sense if you are an Apple Household rather than a PC / windows one. There is a rumour that the new Apple TV (as yet not announced) will have a Wifi router, that way you can connect it via Ethernet to your current router and create a new WiFi network plus get all the benefits of streaming to your TV (like watching midweek mini movies and RedBull coverage of the UCI DH 🙂 ). A new Apple TV will likely sell for around £100-125 (my guess)

I'd certainly expect them to replace it without charge. You're paying for a monthly service which requires equipment that they provide.

Hi,

Thanks for the replys.

I think I will give BT a call and see what I can get out of them (although not holding my breath). Unfortunatly I am unable to get Infinity where I live so that option is ruled out.

Am I correct in thinking the Asus Dark Knight mentioned above would also require me to use a seperate modem?

Also, would getting a Dual Band router be worth it for me?

Cheers,

Rob

The standard firmware didn't support the DHCP options that I need for the MER identification options that Sky use on their broadband.
