I need a multi purpose hat for keeping the sun & drizzly rain off my head. Wide brimmed, but not crazy wide.
Current thoughts are something along the lines of this offering from Tilley

Cheers

No?
Then Sir may prefer a nice flat cap from Failsworth hats.

Knock yourself out. They have a great selection and fairly straight forward returns process. Buy a few different styles to see what suits your noggin shape
Please buy a pith helmet and then post photos of you wearing it.
Tilley hats are great.
I have had mine for over 20 years and it still going strong.
Great protection from the sun even for us blue people.
Tilly.
Pricey, but lifetime guarantee up to and including "sorry guv, I lost it."
Is that Airflo™ going to keep the rain out with all those holes in the top?
Ha.

Tarp Hat. Made from recycled Brazillian truck tarps. Great for keeping the sun and rain off, there is a vented version if you want. And cheaper than a Tilley.

That'll be ideal for cosplaying a Bond Villain.
I’ve just had my Tilley Hemp TH5 replaced under their lifetime warranty - you have to provide photographic evidence of it needing replacement (there were holes), and then photographic evidence it has been destroyed and, for £6 postage, a new one arrived in a few days.
A proper wide brim is really good for keeping rain off your glasses, and from going down the back of your neck - this is where it is better than a cap.
Outdoor Designs do lots of decent sun hats in varying head and brim sizes. I've had a Helios for about 5yrs now and it's very good. it fits my fat head too which is the most important thing.

How would you do that if you'd lost it?
I have the same model, incidentally.
Bought a TH5 from ExtremeGB's Ebay shop last week. £55 instead of £75, arrived in a few days and I've not taken it off since.
Tilley are expensive but very good.

*sigh* Tilly hats are Canadian.
They’re also very good for the purpose required. I’ve got two, a Canadian Winter version, which is a dark blue wool mix with fold-down ear-warmer flaps, and a waxed cotton one, ideal for the sort of weather we’re getting at the moment. They have a neat little pocket set inside the crown, ideal for an emergency cash stash, like folded up tenner.
And they have a lifetime guarantee.
As my working day is spent outdoors, a hat that doesn’t let water dribble down the back of my neck is a Good Thing.
And as the weather seems to have reverted to a traditional British summer, and I’m going back to work in just over a week, it looks like I’ll be making good use of my waxed cotton hat.

Nothing wrong with that, he typed from deep within his hollowed out volcano lair...
A Stetson Le Chiffre would be better, though.
I've had a TH5 for about the last 10 years. Pricey, but still going strong.
Started off Mocha, faded quite a lot in the sun, but still superb. Brilliant in the sun, great in the wet. I wear it too much to be honest.
Thanks all. I’ve taken the Pith helmet.
It's threads like these when other people discuss with what looks like actual first hand knowledge of hats beyond beanie and snap backs that I realise that I've failed as an adult.
Although having looked at those Tilley hats...they do have a gammony whiff to them....

You've got a drover's coat, haven't you? 🙂
Look, if you want to look like you've just stepped out of the reiki tent at Wilderness, that's fine.
But middle class festival hats are not a good look for everyone.
Flat caps, like Minis and venereal disease are classless.
Bucket hat for casual, Panama for best.
Edit: John Deere mesh back cap for mowing the lawn.
I recently had to have a small carcinoma removed. So I was warned that I should not be exposing my ears or head to the strong sunshine in future. In the past, I always wore baseball caps, but those don’t cover the ears of course.
So I looked on the bright side and used it as an excuse to treat myself to two Tilley hats. First time buying Tilley for me. Great service. Super comfy too. Look great imo.
I’d rather look like an Aussie (which I believe Tilley are not) than wear a flat cap. Any time someone walks by in a flat cap, my adult kids are unable to restrain themselves from saying just how stupid it looks. But everyone to their own of course.

Na, they're a sign that you've given up on life, the cranial version of crocs.
Given up?? No, Johnhe's right - they're the perfect skin cancer survivor hat. Love mine, must be over 15 years old now, cool enough in the hot weather and waterproof enough in the rain. Mine's an LT5B according to the label underneath it and does the trick for me - it's really lightweight. And keeps the evil sun off my light northern European skin. And has the advantage of looking so much cooler than cancerous moles.....
This thread is like an episode of the detectorists. 🤔☺
I end up wearing a 10 quid H&M panama hat 90% of the time.
Super versatile and goes with pretty much anything.
The other super casual or sporty 10% ends up being a baseball cap.

Is that a piggy I can hear squealing?
Tilley Outback, not a crazy wide brim and very comfy. Nice waxed finish. It was about the only hat that I felt fitted me properly as I have a small head!

Paddle faster. I hear banjo music.

Arrived an hour ago. Just £2 postage cost. I didn't think you could send a postcard for that these days.
Thanks for the link.

It’s absolutely fine by me, I’m walking around nice and dry when it’s pissing down with rain, while people with short jackets, jeans and flat caps have the rain running down their neck, and the water running off their jackets is soaking their jeans, and they’re looking really pissed off.
Sorry, but you’ve clearly mistaken me for someone who gives a shit what anyone thinks about what I wear, which I’ve said on many occasions on here. I wear what’s appropriate for the weather, not what someone on an Internet forum seems to think I ought to wear.
🙄
Love my tilleys.
gota t3, a montana fedora is great for warming my head up after swimming, and am waiting to get a red t3 wanderer but waiting for a blue one in my wife's size to come into stock so we can combine delivery.
oh and got an old cream one that I can't remember what type it was.
love wearing them and I hate getting a burnt head
Aussie bush hats are brilliant.
