Isle of Wight Mermaid Gin is supposed to be very nice, my other half certainly thinks so. They distil it in the vineyard just across the road from me!

Tanqueray 10

Edit: Not my opinion, it was the GF who drinks gin.

Napue Gin (Can be ordered via Amazon )

A gin distilled in Finland received the highest recognition at the prestigious International Wine and Spirit Competition. The best gin and tonic in the world is made with Napue Gin, a product of the newly-founded Kyrö Distillery Company in Isokyrö, Finland.

This is the conclusion reached by the 250 experts from all over the world who sit on the judging panel for the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) after an exhaustive blind-tasting process.

Cheers, plenty to go on.

Seems very trendy these days, in my time it was always known as Mother's Ruin...

Silent Pool, from a small distillery near Guildford is currently being well received by SWMBO. Nice bottle too.

I'd second that. Properly nice gin, and for whats it worth made by a long standing stalwart of the scottish mtb scene!

Martin Miller's is my every day gin, very good indeed. Jinzu is very good too though may be a touch above £30. Make sure said relative has some good tonic too, don't go and ruin good gin with Schwepps tonic, Fever Free or Fentimans are a good start point.

You could pick anything really from the selection of non mainstream gins (gordons, bombay sapphire, etc) either at the supermarket or on amazon for example, not that these gins aren't nice but you want something special as it's a gift.

Our current favourite is Makar Glasgow Gin.

Aldi also have three different Eden Mill gins at the moment, and at a very good price.

possibly a bit late for you, but I'm currently making a Gooseberry gin for my mother for Christmas. Decentish Waitrose Gin, 500 grams sugar, 500 grams of gooseberry. Leave them for a bit, then strain and put back in the bottle.

First impressions - it's very nice. And you can't buy it anywhere.

+1

Even better if you choose one of their Foraged blends - Gorse is a cracker, as is Lady's Meadow Sweet

Can anyone recommend a good tonic? Had a look for Fentimans but can't find anywhere near me that stocks it.

Fever Tree, pretty much all supermarkets stock it these days.

Yep. Gets the orange colour from the orange peel and "spices from afar".

Tastes like the tears of slaves.

A lot of love amongst my friends for Pinkster as well.

Funnily enough, I was going to add this to my list, but decided to stick at suggesting 2 only. One of my friends went to one of the ginfestivals and said Pinkster was her favourite.

Was round at the in-laws' recently - they are a pair of bon viveurs and they have a rake of quality gins in their drinks cabinet.

The pick of the bunch, I thought, was the unprepossessingly-titled Bathtub Gin.

Lovely kind of delicate, cinnamony flavour to it, reminiscent of those sweets you used to get, Oddfellows.
