I have been looking for a good DSLR for a while now to make the leap from using a bridge camera for most of my amateur photography. I wouldn't want to spend too far over the £500 mark, but I have been assured that this is a very healthy budget for a 'good' DSLR. 🙂

Personal experience (and own photos) would be much appreciated...

They are all good, some just have different attributes.

As above.

If you want the latest sensor and features the Sony a35 came out in the UK today. Jessops have stock allegedly.

I'm rather fond of Canons but they can be rather overpriced new. Why don't you check out the MPB Photographic website. I bought a 400D from them; it was very nearly in as new condition and a damn site cheaper than buying a new Canon with a similar spec. If you buy second hand £500 will get you a half decent body and a couple of lenses.

My money would be on a D5100 and the 18-55 kit lens. About £50 over budget.

It has many f the traits of the D7000 - which is very well reviewed too.

Go to a camera shop and have a play around with the different companies offering in your price range.

When I bought my first DSLR I was all set on getting a Canon, but I played around with a few and ended up buying a Nikon as it simply felt better and more intuitive to me.

If you wanted to splash a wee bit more, I have a Canon 5D for sale in the classifieds. Proper camera that, full frame. I'm selling as I've gone even bigger and it hasn't been used for months.
