People Under the Stairs are awesome.
Saw this guy supporting Blackalicious back in 2003. Not really the same style, but he's by far my favourite hip-hop discovery:

I've got square by buck 65 - haven't checked out anymore of his stuff.
J5 & Roots Manuva - yes all good.
Will have a nose at the tape vs rqm - thanks.
http://www.djcutkillerpodcast.com/
download them all
all the hip hop you will ever need
mostly
some of them are proper lo-fi mix tape quality as well. Currently busting out a 2001 mix.
also The Creators - The Weight
great album
that aesop rock - crooked track errr, rocks ๐
yep the whole evil nine album is very good
you checke dout handsome boy modelling school yet?
dj format
no but will do, bassbin twins remix of crooked is pretty neat ๐
Handsome Boy Modelling School are great - [url=
track is huge!
standard.
Lyrics born is another [url=
Dj Format - yup pretty good & Abdominal's stuff is good as is Lyrics Born
Quannum which includes DJ Shadow/Lyrics Born/Blackalicious.
Edan current favorite.
New Kingdom old skool
Justim Warfield old skool
DJ Yoda variou bits n pieces
Edan sounds quite cool - I've pretty much got the entire Quannum back catalogue, quite like bands like Apscii.
Go French and get some early MC Solaar, IAM or Alliance Ethnik.
Life's a bitch and then you die. Voila!
Couple of really good tunes! Check ou these artists songs-Last emporor - do you care. the grouch - breath, living legends, kev brown, one self - blue bird, EMC - winds of change, sound providers - bragging and boasting, cunninlynguists,
I could go on, I love hip hop. Oh and REALLY early outlast is awesome, eg before b.o.b and mrs Jackson...
Freestylers - We Rock Hard
Any Quannum or J5
Check out my mates sons band
http://www.myspace.com/chinawhitemusic
They've just supported Kurtis Blow and the Furious Five on tour. And they're about to go on tour with the Sugar Hill Gang. Keeping it old school and funky
Loving EMC - din't realise Masta Ace was still recording....
seriously how good is this thread? so much better than discussing how good a driver everyone thinks they are or what tyre pressure to run!
That Creators album is pretty ****ing excellent.
Excellent work, STW! I'll be working through the suggestions here tomorrow. In the meantime, look up some of the Mick Boogie mixtapes, and the Wildabeast / Portishead album called Wildahead Portibeast. 8)
aaaah - I've got a track by The Creators on Duck Seaon vol 1 - a DJ Babu mix tape.
Anyone wants to know a source for more free rap stuff than you can shake a stick at, email me.
Has Nocando been mentioned yet? "Jimmy the Lock" is utter brilliance.
Would this be a good place to mention the upcoming Infesticons album?
http://marathonofdope.com/?p=649
Listen to Plane Theme. I'm excited and that takes a lot these days
NickyB really enjoyed your selections. Esp evilnine. Really really excellent music, nice one.
Buck 65
+1. Buck is a genius IMO. Synesthesia is probably his most straight-up hip hop album. Hugely talented guy.
A few no doubt mentioned already, but...
Aesop Rock's album Float (fairly old) is out of this world, produced by Blockhead and the best thing either have done
Personal Journals by Sage Francis
the first Latyrx album
Antagonist Survival Kit by sixtoo (his Duration EP is also amazing)
Iron Galaxy by Cannibal Ox
Black Mamba Serums by Bigg Jus
Company Flow's Funcrusher Plus is where a few of these people first surfaced
Seen Infesticons mentioned - their first album is ace and plenty of Mike Ladd's other stuff is quality, esp his Welcome to the Afterfuture lp. Avoid his experimental jazz stuff though!
Herbaliser and DJ Vadim stuff is all good
Braintax
Lewis Parker
J-Live's recorded output is all good, but never quite matches his phenomenal live shows
Anything touched by the hand of Madlib is usually great, but an all-time favourite of mine is the Madvillainy album - Madlib and MF DOOM both at the top of their game.
DOOM's own output is a bit variable to say the least (he is nuts though so fair enough) but his Vaudeville Villains (released as Viktor Vaughn), Take Me To Your Leader (as King Geedorah) and DangerDoom (with the massively overrated Dangermouse) are all brilliant. The thing with Kool Keith though - promised so much, delivered so little.

I shall indeed check this - that's quite a tour history already!
yeah second that evilnine feedback - good album, quality breaks and beats
also checked Dj Format and Handsome Boy Modelling School, both awesome!
faith in stw restored by hiphop thread shock!
Aesop rock, uh rocks, his songs are great. On a more aggressive note check out 'one six' by 7l and esoteric. And some chilled canadian hip hop by 'specifics'. Um, also try listening to some stuff by murs, especially a song called animals featuring Phonte.
For some excellent hip hop instrumentals search for 'respect your elders' by memo, and 'katherine' by Panik. All their tunes are amazing.
nickc - you got the Creators album then, i'll be needing to borrow that as i lost my copy years ago
an excuse perhaps for a trip to wales?
2tyred - They're great live too. He's only 21 and he's finding the whole experience pretty surreal. As you would. I went to see him live and we were sat backstage afterwards chatting to Kurtis Blow and Melle Mel. Mad.
Their tour dates are on the Myspace page too. Well worth checking out
Check out The Nextmen, UK producers with a mix of UK and American MCs - very good imo.

Ooh yeah! 'MMM...food' is fab too.
and 'Born Like This'
Aye, I have it knocking 'bout somewhere...Wales sounds cool though.

Personally I find doom/ madvillian really dull. He has no flow. Plus his lyrics are just a bit deppressong.
Personally I find doom/ madvillian really dull. He has no flow. Plus his lyrics are just a bit deppressong.
Its the fact his flow's so off-kilter that I really like. I find he's one of those artists I constantly hear new things in even when I know a record inside out.
Nobody wants free rap?
Anyway - an official Sage Francis freebee, here -

Love that Goats album (although a bit dated now). Don't think they released another did they?
This is where its @, great skillz on the bike too!
Nice flatland, but.... ATROCIOUS rapping!! could they sound any whiter?? ๐
Try some Lupe Fiasco or, if you're just after the beats not the vocals, some Flying Lotus.
whats flatland?
They do have a cheese sound to them, first time I heard hilltop hoods I thought it was a joke and I laughed soo hard...They really are growers tho and they have cult status in australia, especially adelaide...check out the calling album, but defo cheese warning...
thanks for the Roots tip, its party time in my basement at the moment
Wu Tang Clan ( Method man, O.D.B, Rza, Ghoastface killer all made good solo albums)
Jehst
RJD2
Crooklyn Dodgers
NedRapier - 'Fallin' Also used on a skate video called Juice by Source Clothing. One of my fav tunes of all time!
