All this PRISM stuff, plus our IT deptartment banning us from using anything with a US based server (evidently they don't believe William Hague either) has made me think more seriously.
Can anyone recommend a email provider (ideally IMAP) that has UK or at worst EU based servers? Plus Net is my current ISP so I could use that email address, although I don't believe it's IMAP based?
You can set up your plusnet mail for IMAP. Quick search on the support site should give you the settings. If I remember rightly from setting up my parents email. The only thing you need that's different is the incoming server address which is imap.plus.net (I think)
Sounds like a quick solution.
I don't like the idea of all my banking details floating about inside American "intellegence" Far safer to have it sitting in Yorkshire. Does mean the hassle of having to transfer everything should I decide to chnge ISP's. But then it seems you have to change your email address regularly to keep the SPAM at bay.
Or get a virtual machine hosted in a UK Data Centre and run your own server OS on it with your own registered UK domain name (Don't go .com .org .net) then you can have an email address for every site you register with, which is handy for finding out what gits distribute your email address to spammers even when you select the correct tick boxes. IMAP, Webmail and a handy proxy server for when I'm travelling and need a UK IP address for the likes of BBC Iplayer etc.
Your IT department has banned you from using anything using US based servers? Do you just mean email or is that no Windows updates, no Google search, finding out where all the sites you use are hosted, and no sending email to anyone with a US based email service?
That said, I much prefer IMAP to POP3 after the odd computer "glitch" even if it does mean the host keeping copies of all my mail.
You could just register a domain of your own and use that purely for email. That's what I do with a domain the wife and I registered 20 odd years ago. Basic hosting package gives you unlimited email addresses, spam filtering and some web space that you can use for whatever. I use ariotek.co.uk which is a fairly small hosting company based in Glasgow.
That way you can change ISP willy nilly without bothering your email.. The host I use even has a bunch of tools you can set up for your web space, including tools to create your own private cloud storage which might be a useful way to use the space that comes with the account.
Think the basic hosting package costs £20 a year or so...

But where are the servers?

I'd be asking the IT department for a list. Is this for your private mail or work? Does the IT dep not manage the work mail? Why are they bothered (allowed to have a say) in your private mail?
You might want to consider German or Swiss based services. PRISM is fairly benign when compared to what the UK government is after. ( http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/06/11/prism_numbers_not_adding_up/ 4th para from the top). If you do use your own server connections to it should be secured. This will require either a self signed certificate or you will need to pay for one.
Sorry that the above isn't really that helpful. Just something to consider I guess. I quite like using United Hosting.
