[Closed] Recommend a suitable Snowdonian walk

I'm a year older tomorrow and as such I'm off to Wales with some friends for a surprise on Sunday (I suspect it's that trampoline cave thing), but we were going to do a bit of a hike on Saturday.

We're staying at my mountaineering club's hut, just outside of Dinorwig, over the valley from Llanberis. My initial thought was Snowdon, up Rhyd Ddu, down Ranger, but I'm worried about the snow/temperature/preparedness of my mates. None of them will have crampons, and I don't want to end up too deep.

Can anyone recommend a nice, lower altitude walk that has less chance of being death on a stick for less experienced walkers? Found a route up Moel Siabod, but again, it looks like it includes a bit of scrambling, which might be nasty without spikes.

Thanks in advance.

Snowden even up Pyg / down Miners needs some care in ice, people have fallen off the path and been seriously injured. That being said it's do-able with care and you could bail before the last section up to the main ridge / railway - which is where people tend to slide off !

I have posted this before, Crib Goch. Chapeau to the guy concerned and his Collie, makes ne nervous just watching

I saw a photo today, taken this morning, of a tarp pitched at the bottom of the Miner's track, looked to be about half a foot of snow....definitely need a less demanding route.

If you're in Dinorwig how about strolling into the quarries then north up the track to Marchlyn Mawr and up Carnedd y Filiast? Even under snow it's doable without crampons (well unless it's sheet ice) and there are great views over Ogwen and across to Snowden. I've gone from there over to Elidir Fawr in winter conditions a couple of times which is great but has some tricky bits which I wouldn't recommend without crampons (a friend did a very spectacular glissade off the northwest flank on what turned out to be bone hard ice).

Good shout that, I'll stick it on the potentials list.

Snowden by the tourist route up and down should be doable, especially if you have one winter experienced person who's known for making good safe decisions (even when it's not popular).
We did it with an inexperienced group in full winter condition and a few of the group hadn't done anything like this sort of stuff before at all. All depends on you, weather forecast and whether they all have appropriate clothing, boots and fitness. if the snow is frozen it can be much more sketchy to walk on than soft snow etc etc.
You could maybe do a circuit of Llyn Idwal, but I can't recall what the path's like under Devils Kitchen and it's only going to be a few hours walk.

Miners to the higher tarn (Glaslyn) is a pretty flat / gradual climb (car park 359 feet, tarn 605). Admittedly that won't be an exciting walk but you'd get to see the face of Snowden and Y Lliwedd close up.

You could walk up Miners then decide whether to do the steeper bit to where it joins Pyg and back to the car park that way, Pyg is a "high level (cough) traverse" then a rocky/boldery bit after passing where the Cribb Goch path goes up. If a few have crampons and some rope it could be quite entertaining the little "climb" up from Miners to Pyg, make a decision at the time.

Just looking at my walking book "High (2500ft+) Peaks of England and Wales" not a huge amount in it jumps out for easy winter walks in that area

A low level /bad weather route I have done a few times:
from idwal, head east towards tryfan find and follow path up to llyn Bochlwyd, if conditions ok go up to bwlch tryfan at south side tryfan go over and down N.towards the main road. loop back to start/extend round llyn ogwen hope conditions ok for you. I shall be sat in cabin awaiting snowmageddon . enjoy

jag61 - That actually looks like a pretty safe bet, I love Tryfan as well, what a lovely lump of rock it is ๐Ÿ˜€

There would only really be me and Mrs A with proper crampons and axes, so I don't really want to take too much of a risk.

Don't underestimate the Llanberis path (tourist route) in winter. It has a couple of sections that are known accident black spots when it's slippery. Mostly I'm sure due to people thinking 'its only the tourist route'.

Keep an eye on the national park facebook/website for weather and condition updates of the mountain.

Plenty of other hills in Snowdonia if Snowdon looks a bit wild.

How about the Crafnant / Geirionydd loop? Spectacular scenery, but I wouldn't bother if it was misty. (Random internet route description)

Or Llyn Elsi near Betws?

I've never done it, but a walk around Llyn Trawsfynydd appeals to me, too.

The scramble up moel siabod is OK, I've done it in snow without cramp ons. Its short, not that steep and wide so you cant fall off the edge! Nice walk.

No idea on snow conditions up there, but both the miners and llanberis have dodgy bits in icy conditions. I'd be looking for something else with an unequipped party.

Going to be milder and raining hard I think on Saturday/ Sunday which may have some bearing on conditions higher up.

Which club hut are you staying at Andeh?
If it's Ty Powdyr, were down next weekend.
๐Ÿ™‚

Quarry is a good shout.
Have a nosey round Padarn Country Park too, loads to explore and some great views from the Brynrefail end.

You could go and have a mooch round the old bomb store, or have a pop at Moel Eilio if it's not too grim.

Personally, I'm looking forward to a slow wander round the lake and a ride through the Quarry.

We're at the Lincoln MC hut, Ty Gwyn. I've been in the club for years but never made it to our own hut, apparently it's quite nice. Small but perfectly formed ๐Ÿ˜€

I think I'll see how everyone feels on the day, there's plenty of options to have a go at. It could be a long journey over tonight, so folk may be less enthusiastic tomorrow ๐Ÿ™„
