It seems I need a sat nav and that right quick. What would you suggest is the best inexpensive one?

TomTom for me.

For cheap - TomTom have an outlet store based in Holland. Around 2/3rds the Halfords price.

For quick - Halfords - on one of their specials. Walk in - pick it up - pay - job done.

Tom Tom not for me.

I recently had a Tom Tom XL and thought it was poor. Power lead had to fit into a recessed hole in the back of the unit, took ages to get it plugged in, mount was too small for some of the cars I drive to fit the unit anywhere sensible. Software updates managed to lose some of the maps forcing you to have to do full re-loads. After a software update all the favourites had been lost. Traffic alerts for 'safety' cameras was poor, either alarming sites on opposite carriageway of motorway/autobahn, or just plain incorrect.
Customer service was poor, I would not buy another one.

Tom Tom, simple and straight forward operation, (if you get the City then street idea on the address input) works well traffic add on is worth the money these days

If you have a smartphone with GPS inside, Navfree is pretty good and, err, free

Never had a problem with any of the three Tom Toms we have had. They have all been great even in some rather rural parts of Europe, can't fault them. I have used a couple of other brands and some built in units but wasn't keen on any of them.

I got a navman from tesco it looked the same as the cheapest tomtom but half the price. Does the job fine except lane selection on 4 lane roundabouts but you'll look at the signs to double check anyway.

Garmin/TomTom they all seem the same these days. Just find one you like the look of and can afford.

Happy with my TomTom, map updating seems expensive though.

I have one of the original TomTom Ones. Still going strong. Spent £40 for a map update a while ago. Much easier to use than newer ones I have seen.

I would say a TomTom as well but currently the software to update it is driving me to the point I want to murder anyone involved in it's development. It's like Garmin and TomTom got together and agreed they'd only compete on how good their devices were and they'd only spend £1 each on developing their connectivity/update software.
