/He is just back from Oz and doesn't know the South of England. Great plumber though and needs a sat nav to help find the houses.

Cheap as you can get. Are there monthly fees etc?

What features should he look for?

But Garmin customer service is excellent and I would spend the extra 7-9 quid on the garmin.

No subscription, you could update the maps in 18 months or so, but TBH, it would probably be cheaper to just buy a new one and ebay the old one every couple of years.
