I've always used AVG Free with no major issues.

Cheers druid/muke - not heard of that one - will probably give that a try.

Somouk - does avg slow your system down noticeably?

Yawwwwwn - evidently not.

You asked and the forum specialist told you to look no further and you bit him. Hope he's feeling kindly towards you when you next have a problem.

The proper answer is:

Get a Mac, they don't get virii!!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

Stands well back and won't return to this lit firework.

Still use avast! here - perfect track record on my machines.

MSE seems to do well for a lot of people but I see no compelling reason to change.

so what you using as a measure of success? Viruses found/blocked, not having a virus (as far as you know)
Gotten a bit bored of AV, all work PCs have them and still get loads of viruses/malware Alternatively on my home PC I don't use any and (afaik) no problems.

Guess my point is if you know what you're doing you might be ok without it but if you don't know what your doing AV won't keep you safe anyway. I'd put proper backup procedure for your pics/movies/files way above having a little icon in your system tray.

Lack of virus + lack of impact on system performance.

http://www.av-comparatives.org/ also helped when I was originally choosing. (avast! does well for a freebie, MSE refuse to take part).

Been using Avast here for a couple of years and have had a couple of attacks picked up/stopped by it but not noticed any detrimental impact on the machines.

Using it in association with Zone Alarm firewall and both seem to be doing their job admirably, so don't see the point in going anywhere else.

All AV scanners are a compromise, MSE is recommended as it's about a good a detection rate as anything else out there and uses less system resources than most. For sure the end user is the first line of defence though, don't click on random web-site links or download stuff from torrents blindly and you'll probably cut the chances of being exposed to a virus by a large amount. There's also a good argument for running a VM as a sandbox for web browsing/downloads and scan that (preferably with a different scanner to your main system), if it gets compromised then just delete it and recreate from a template.
