Looking to get a nice wee mp3 player with decent battery life and decent sonic quality.

My son has a Sansa Clip which I quite like, feels well made, easy to use, sounds good and is nice and small. I've heard Sony make some pretty good stuff too but have no experience of them... I don't want to spend too much so ipods are out.

Headphones, always preffered over the ear type but am open to suggestions of others if there are better out there. Again, don't want to spend too much...

Cheers

Sony Walkman in whatever size memory you require, missus and myself have the 8gb, daughter has the 16gb
Sold my daughters no longer required 4gb on here couple of weeks back, never had a problem with any of them and batteries hold a good charge too

+1 Sony MP3 players. Great players, with crap names.

Mines an NWZ S639 or something. 8 gig I think other sized are available.

Couples with some senheiser PX100 headphones (over the ear) its superb.

I have an iPod Classic but the one I use for riding is a Sansa Fuze with an extra SD Card so it is a 12GB. Quite inexpensive, well built, works ok, battery life - easily long enough.

Sony (or Cowon) all the way if you want good sound quality. I have an x series which has built in noise cancelling and a load of other great features but is not cheap. its is very well made, solid state and nice to use , the stock headphones are more than good enough as well.

A quick google will help you.

Ipods never win on sound quality, but destroy everything else for accessories.

Generally because they're always compared using the stock oem 'phones, and Sony are always gonna win there, because they make their own, which ain't bad. Start doing a comparison using quality canalphones and 320Kb files and most people wouldn't be able to hear a difference. My 80Gb iPod 5G, Nano and iPhone all sound as good as anything else I've heard, including straight from a cd player, but I always use quality 'phones, and even then, there are noticable differences between makes. I had some CX300's which I liked a lot, but when I got an iPhone I needed phones with a mic and remote, so I bought a pair of Ultimate Ears SuperFi 4Vi's. The difference was astonishing. They got broken and replaced with a pair of 5Vi's which are even better, and I've got a pair of cheaper MetroFi 220Vi's which are fantastic for around £30-40, and some TripleFi 10 Pro's. I'd suggest Superfi 3 or 5 Pro's, simply because, although they're fairly pricy,
you can easily replace the cables for around £20, and even individual earpieces with the 3's, and there are very few phones you can do that with. You can get custom fit eartips like musicians use as well. UE's are amazingly good, I have mine in all day, as I use them as hearing protection as well, working in a noisy environment.
[edit] I've just had a shufti on'tinterweb, and SuperFi 3's are going for £59.95, and a spare cable's around £19.95.
Have a look at them here: http://www.themp3company.co.uk/index.php?id=product&product_id=1434

I have a 8gb Fuze as well, bought it as a cheapy for £40 on offer after getting fed up of spending decent money on a player and have it last a year or 2 and then die (Creative and Apple). Really pleased with it, prefer it to the more expensive models I've had. Doesn't have the bells and whistles of more expensive players but what it does, it does well. Sounds great, easy to use, real small and expandable with microSD cards.

And at £40, if it does die like the others then I won't be crying too much.

Rockbox only works on the older version though.

Another Fuze fan here. (...with different micro sd cards loaded with various stuff)
Using it with cx300's as they work well and are rediculasly cheap these days...about £10 delivered from Play.com

The Rockbox thing is as previously mentioned, is only stable on the Version 1.
Last time I looked there were quite a few people working on a Rockbox release for the version 2 - but it's not ready yet.

Another plus ( for me), is that it's got a 'usable' radio. By usable, I mean that it seems to work better than most of the other pmp's I've used with this feature.

Getting on a bit these days, but still very good at what it does.

Chris
