Woman on R4 this morning bemoaning the fact she might not be able.to go on holiday abroad. 82 and fully jagged so should.be allowed.
Let her go I say, then any illness/death attributable to her I'll go to her house and give her a biography of those she's affected and remind her it was her selfishness.
Spain appears to be open for tourism already, 20km from the border here and the hotels and bars were full of French this weekend, no doubt Easter will be the same. Marvellous - we’ve been confined to the province and even the city limits for months, 14 day incidence is on the rise but apparently it will be business as usual over Easter.
When we’re locked down again later in April it will of course be the fault of teenagers drinking with their mates…
Was hoping to get a quiet Air Bnb on a greek Island in September but I'm not bothering. Too much risk and the point of a holiday is enjoyment and a distraction from the anxiety of normal life.
Will look for something in this country but away from the obvious touristy spots that will be full of ****s.

Tourists?
£5k fine if you decide to go to an airport - or further - without appropriate reason is being put into law this week effective March 29th.
Essentially, if you go on holiday during a lockdown, thats £5k, plus maybe £1k for a family of 4 for covid testing to get on the planes, then possibly £1750 for 10 days in Slough on Sea on your return.
**** that for a game of soldiers.
Nah, that's more than 4 letters.
I think the missing word is "deer".
dont forget the requirement to be vaccinated, expect our neighbours to refuse to acknowledge the AZ jabs in the ongoing tit4tat of tourism incomes.
"game of soldiers" - actually looking like the only legal way to get out of this place.

Except if you're Stanley Johnson. They're really laughing in our faces.
I live in the Welsh Marches, just inside Herefordshire. We started to get more tourists after 2007. All the border towns have been sprouting cafes. Brexit will further increase that, actually it already has with uncertainty holding the £ down. Covid is going to boost tourism even more. Although I voted to remain tourism is up and likely to remain so. Mid price houses are sold out, normally nothing much is sold between November and March. Tourist money being spent in Britain is a net gain and folks fleeing cities may help as long as they aren't all retirees. However nothing kills an area like second homes, just look at the Lakes or Cornwall in Winter.
We never really noticed recessions before as we have always been in one, from here to the coast. There's really good cross country riding round here. The neighbouring county of old Radnorshire is 24% open moorland with the highest density of combined PROW and ORPAS in Britain and it's severely under utilised. Years ago when organising Polaris one the very top guys queried why the Bridleways were marked wrongly. I had to explain that a Bridleway is a legal entity and a track is a track. In the Parks virtually all PROW are tracks due to very heavy usage. Not here.

She needs to go to Cyprus to sort out my late father's estate and assess the state of their/her house out there that's been unoccupied since November 2019.

Looking at the new legislation announced to day the simple solution is to get on the old inter web and book some house viewings in the riding destination of choice. I’m sure the estate agents of Morzine, bourg, alpe d’huez can look forward to a busy summer of viewings and very few sales.
Just another fine example of how utterly bonkers the rules are
Let’s guess how many Tory MPs have second homes overseas then!!
How much support have they announced the aviation sector ??? No, didn’t think so.
Has anyone got a link to the actual proposed legislation regarding fining people £5k if they go abroad without good reason?
I could do with reading the actual law rather than some media outlets interpretation of it.
Couldnt find it from a quick google
Supposedly this (not checked it myself)
Son's GF works at airport she says she never knew so many people had a dentists in Spain/Tenerife etc 🙄
Thanks, those rules are pretty tight.
Looks as though travel to Éire is allowed, which having booked a ferry for is a relief.

I would be interested to see that too - I'm guessing the fines are 'up to' £5k as that's how these things are usualy phrased. If you genuinely need to do property maintenence and official administration, that's one thing, but the obvious loop hole would be you could book an appointment with a randome time share company and then just go on holliday.
I like that the 2nd homes clause is being labelled the 'Stanley Johnson loophole'
As a rule of thumb I won’t go anywhere where there is an actual car park
Awesome, I have similar (when not in lockdown) rules:
Never drink in a pub with a flat roof
Never eat in a restaurant with pictures of the food outside
Never eat in a restaurant with pictures of the food outside
How do you know what to order ?
Never eat in a restaurant with pictures of the food outside
I keep seeing a picture of a pork chop in the garden or an omelette and chips down at the beach.

Literally a poophole loophole.
Well it's almost time to hopefully get some concrete answers for our May trip to Portimao. Although i'm still not 100% convinced that Mondays announcement will give us the answer. But it's close to decision time with the provider and trackday company, so whether we have the answers or not, we'll be making a decision in the next few days anyway.
Must admit, i'm completely torn on this one, i honestly have no idea at all what's the right/wrong thing to do on this one.

Ah it’s easy,if your poor (expensive)staycation, if your rich holiday home or the Caribbean 🙂

Personally I'd stay at home, they will be other years and I don't want to be the person responsible for bringing more COVID back into the country and/or spreading it to others.
Or, go enjoy it, but make sure you have the money / wit about you to do the right thing - test, quarantine and isolate at Slough on Sea or at home until you are sure you arent at risk of spreading it.

This.
If its allowed, and you are prepared to do the full quarantine/isolation thing if its required, then go abroad. Please don't go and then complain that the rules have all changed while you were away, its not like it should be a surprise to anyone if they do.

Why on earth would I? It's not me, I've not once complained on here so don't make out like I would.

1) Ireland, it's not Éire unless you're going to put the rest of the sentence in Irish too.
2) I hope you like quarantine.

I don't think anyone's suggesting you would Weeksy, but many have and undoubtably will do.
We all have to be prepared for sudden changes and inconveniences and wherever you choose to go just accept its part of todays world and suck it up. I'm off to Center Parcs on the 12 with no pool or indoor restaurants - oh the inconvenience! 😀 But I'm happy with some money off, and a few days away from the hustle an bustle with a few beers, walks and barbeques plus some go-ape, fun on a lake and zip wire with the kids. A change is as good as a rest as they say, and its a bit of downtime with a different view out of the window.
2) I hope you like quarantine
Funny how they got the constitution wrong, “ We, the people of Éire,...” 😉 very topical being Easter and all.
Quarantine, hopefully a lot of time between now and August but is still not a massive problem our house is in the middle of nowhere, unfortunately it is a house which has had no one in it for some time and needs a bit of attention now.
Why on earth would I? It’s not me, I’ve not once complained on here so don’t make out like I would.
Sorry, that was a more general comment and wasn't intended to be a pop at you personally.
No problem fella, thanks for the clarification.
We're not in a position either financially or from a work perspective where we could do 10 days on return, so if the risk is there, we'll be saying no.
I'm not even sure £1000 worth of testing for the 3 of us is acceptable, so it all hinges upon what's said Monday.
There is the "selfishness" aspect but I honestly don't see us being an infection risk. Maybe that's crazy talk but I dunno

Testing and isolation will not be going away this year, and likely not for a long while.

Everyone is an infection risk.
Yes, home or abroad.
Everyone on a plane will be tested, probably vaccinated too. Can you say the same about Sainsburys? A coffee shop? Train to work?
Although i’m still not 100% convinced that Mondays announcement will give us the answer.
Well it's not going to be a definitive "yes you can go on holiday abroad" is it. Because things can change either here or your destination in the meantime.

It's a useful distinction between "The Free State" and "The Six Counties" (Guess whose in-laws were from the Northern section)? We always referred to it as Éire when discussing it in school (Dublin 1970's) so either would do.
Just hypothetically, what would it take to get a refund on pre-booked flights?
It seems like foreign travel is effectively illegal, but since they haven't actually enforced a ban on flights, there would be no refunds due?
Not complaining or looking for sympathy, just trying to weigh up potential losses vs. benefits of cancelling a trip...

Tbh someone had told me how to do accents on the ipad keypad and I was trying it out 🙂
Like I have said before....
It’s not just What Boris says we can... should I stay or should I go .... type thing
A lot also depends on the other countries allowing us to travel to them ..... and a lot may not ......

Ironically, at this stage at least it looks like BoJo got something right (a stuck clock etc), putting a bet on every vaccine going was the right plan*. The rest of the EU is hitting a third wave, and we're ........ not.
A lot of countries might still be locked down if you tried to visit in the next few months so might not be welcoming anyone. But it's not "us", and if things carry on the way they are, you might get your 10 days in Benidorm without having to beat the Germans up to put your towel on the lounger closest to the all-inclusive bar.
*spending hundreds of millions upfront on two doses of everything for everyone at ~£10 a shot seemed madness. But in retrospect buying multiples of what we needed is going to buy us months of "normal" this summer which will pay that back thousandfold.
Ireland, it’s not Éire unless you’re going to put the rest of the sentence in Irish too.
Why's that then?
I'm intrigued.

Different language, you wouldn't say I'm going to Espana.
