I know nothing about IT. I have a couple of Sonos hi-fi things which are great but too expensive. Surely there must be a way to programme a Pi, plug it into my amp (in each room) so that it sits on the system, looks like a Sonos and works just like one.
Any experts?

You could look into OpenElec or Raspbmc to run XBMC on the PI and then enable AirPlay on them. So you can play music from iTunes and iOS devices etc.. Im sure there are other linux solutions which replicate Sonos services and could probably be ported to the Rasp Pi
